Coated or uncoated OEM wheels . . .

What are the stock aluminum wheels considered on my 2016 X5? I've been using McGuire's G14324 Aluminum Wheel cleaner on them but noticed the bottle says "harmless for uncoated wheels" . . .

Don't the OEM wheels have some type of clear coat on them? Is that considered a coated wheel?

I use Jescar Powerlock sealant followed by PS2 carnauba on my paint, but I'd like to use the Powerlock on my wheels too. Is this advisable?

I just had my daughter's highlander allloy wheels all 4 re-finished as they were corroding and she said she read that we are not supposed to use anything on them?

Thx

Factory wheels are clear coated. So using aluminum polish is not the right thing.

Which OEM wheel do you have? Stock X5’s come with several different wheel choices. All BMW wheels are aluminum on the X5. They are never uncoated from the factory. Even the machined face wheels have a clear coating on them to prevent corrosion. All are coated in some way.

I would check YouTube. Tons of videos about detailing wheels and what to use and not to use. Gonna be more clear than anyone trying to type. And yes you can use power lock on the wheels. You can ceramic coat them too.

And sounds like you're using cleaner designed for straight chromed or polished not painted (clear coat) wheels. Not good. It'll be too harsh on the paint. Chemical guys and ammo make good wheel cleanwrs for painted rims. Which is all the X5 bmw oem rims.

OK thanks for those responses. Thats what I figured that they are clear coated and the McGuires product was too harsh for clear coat.

I'll check out the Ammo products and Chemical Guys.

Actually, the MGuires product I've been using a blue spray foaming liquid "does not" say safe for factory coated wheels.

They have a "red" spray foaming liquid that says safe for factory coated wheels which can also be used on the tires too (product: G9524):

Description:
Xtreme Cling foam vigorously clings to vertical surfaces and dissolves brake dust and grime
Safe and effective on factory painted and clear coated rims, and tires as well
Visually see dirt and grime lifting off the wheel & tire
Easy to use and convenient trigger spray, spray-on and hose-off with water
Leaves rims with a brilliant shine while effectively cleaning
