All weather mats problem
So I currently have weathertech and found a huge problem underneath, massive amounts of crusted salt. It took me 45mins with a carpet cleaner upholstery attachment to get it all out. I think it's mostly because the pedal is fixed to the floor that stuff comes off my boots/shoes and under the mats. Anybody know of a good solution?

What kind of all weather mats you have? My X5 came with mats that fit perfectly (not free thought). After first winter in Toronto, not too much salt leaked to the carpet.

Do you have the digital fit or the rubber one?
Anyways i use a Dyson vacuum with the crevice extension on max; sucks all the dirt and salt from around the accelerator petal area.

Really not happy with them given the fact they can't get under the gas pedal. Seems like there should be a solution. |

I think WeatherTech and OEM rubber try to stay away from sensitive areas, i.e. pedals, for obvious reasons: they don't want to be blamed for pedal hinderance. On the other hand, you buy those to cover you in these situations. I have the same problem w/the pedal area, but not the footrest. Rear is worse as sand can pretty much slide easily onto the carpet. Leaning towards complete custom floor mats, if I can become certain that vacuuming will no longer be needed.

That will happen in all "nice weather" areas unfortunately. Being a cleaning freak, i put some protective self adhering film from Home Depot on that area.

After the fiasco with 'all weather mats' here. I bought some 3D Maxspider mats. They seems to cover more than the Weathertech ones. Not installed yet since i have to clean the carpet but will be posting some pics here so u can see.

I can relate, living Wisconsin. I also have the WeatherTech floor liners, and no matter how careful I am, I get a ton of salt build up around the gas pedal. I like the self-adhesive film idea. I'll try to remember that next fall. I have tried the vinegar method. It works ok but the car stinks for days. More recently I have been using a Green Machine carpet cleaner in the spring to extract the salt. Hot water in the carpet cleaner seems to help the salt to dissolve better.
Those being dismissive of this problem obviously don't live in an area with snow. If the salt isn't extracted, the carpet is basically ruined after a few years. |

Personally guys just soak a towel with water and squeeze it over the salt and let it soak or pour some light water over the carpet then vacuum with a heavy duty vacuum. During winter I made it an extra chore to bounce my shoes together outside the car while sitting on the seat to dump those extra snow and salt before getting completely inside and it works. I go snowboarding alot too and I rarely get much salt in my interior. Heck I couldnt even fathom living down south with the sweltering heat just to get away from a minor issue like this lol.
