Crank hub install

Found a shop willing to install the capture from vtt for 800. They’ve never done it but have a bmw certified tech with over 15 years experience that used to work at a bmw plant

Should I do this? This isn’t going to require timing or anything since it’s just the bolt capture but god always so scared of someone screwing the car up.

I’ve called many shops and most shops don’t seem to have experience with this which tells me that this issue isn’t as widespread as the forums make it out to be

Any decent BMW mechanic can install the bolt capture. Many shadetree mechanics could. I plan on self installation... 800$ in labor is a little bit high. What is his hourly rate?

Actual time it took my friend and I about 2.5 hours. I'd say a shop would charge about 4 hours labor though.

$800 is certainly high. Keep looking for a shop that can get it done in the $500 range.

Is there any chance the crank can come loose and need the engine retimed while this is being done??

You don’t put a socket on the crank bolt, so why would you?

The pulley has enough belt tension on it that it's not likely to move during installation.

My pulley came out as soon as I remove the last bolt. The CBC installation took me 3 hours. This was my first time working on a S55 and no lift. A shop should be able to do it in 2 hours if they had done it before.

Not that easy but, doable. I kept the water pump belt in the pulley since I did not knew how to remove the tension off the pulley. That made it hard to put everything back. I searched online for half an hour, how to remove the tension but, failed. I removed the oil cooler, intercooler pump and fan from the bottom. From the top, I just removed the left air box to gain access to the fan plug, clips and hose clips.

If someone knows how to remove the water pump belt, please post the steps.

Crank Hub Install = CBC+Spline Lock
Crank Bolt Capture by itself is not a full crankhub install but yes $800 is pretty high.

Where do u live?
