smog question

Just bought an m4 from out of state and it has a burgertuning intake, do they visually inspect under the hood for smog tests? Will they care about the intake?

Depends on where you live/take it. When I lived in CA, I brought I multiple out of state cars with mods (no tune, but intakes, etc.) and was never inspected for mods or flagged during my smog test. But I went to the same garage every time and it was some old small timely small town feeling one in Westchester in LA

The last couple of smog shops I went to both checked under the hood. My guess is they'd prob call out your intake unless it looks OEM.

To clarify my earlier point, they did always open my hood but never really inspected m. And I had some gnarly intakes before. For example, I had a Camaro SS with a massive roto fab intake. No issue at that shop.

If the spot is legit your car will fail the visual.

Given that there are CARB approved aftermarket I takes etc, that would have to be one super knowledgeable smog tech.

CARB approved items will need a sticker placed on the item with the CARB-EO on it, typically.

In the grand scheme of things, an intake is probably not scrutinized as much as catalyst removal.

Most intakes won’t screw the emissions output to my knowledge.

depends on the shop but if it passes without codes they will likely not point it out.
