Hit rev limiter
today I hit the rev limiter unintentionally in my car. And the power cut off immediately.
Did I screw anything up? It was a stupid mistake that I've never done since owning this car.. any input would be great!! Thanks |

The rev limiter A. Is there to prevent damage and B. Is raised to 8600 via many available tunes, so you hitting yours at 8400 is lower than many of us hit

Nah, I've mis-shifted into 2nd instead of 4th before after taccin' out 3rd on the track and it about locked up the back wheels.. just a good ol' fashion drivetrain stress test.. now who wants to buy my car!?!?...

How is a tune that allows you to hit 8600 rpm a good thing for the engine since the tune doesn't upgrade any of the mechanical components? The stock redline is there to warn you before you hit the mechanical limits of the materials/components.

That's one of the positives of having a high rev'ing engine. I too have mis-shifted but from 4th to 3rd (vice 5th) and the tach jumped to 6500 rpm.

Right — redlines are conservatively set below the engine’s limits. I think Dinan offers an 8600 rpm tune and matches the factory warranty — it’s ok to hit 8600 daily.
Mechanical over revs are another matter. But I have mis-shifted like one of the posters above and dropped to 2nd instead of 4th (but from 6th on the highway) and probably hit about 9000 rpm. Might have locked up the back wheels. Certainly some banging and smoke. That was about 5 years ago and I did change the rod bearings the next year. Car still going strong and I later added that 8600 rpm Dinan tune. There are those of us who drive these cars and those who preserve them for the next owner. I did not buy to hold for the next guy to enjoy. Last edited by pbonsalb; 02-07-2019 at 09:17 PM.. |

Thanks for the input guys! I feel a bit better now..
I forgot to mention it was not due to mis shifting I revd 1st gear all the way to redline and didn't notice how quickly it got to redline so I didn't shift which led to a fuel cut... just wanted to make sure I didn't cause any damage... |

Now, try driving a Subaru 2.0l after an M3. I found the rev limiter quite quickly in the Subaru...

The engine is designed to reach the rev limiter ignition cutoff but not live there.

If you don’t hit the rev limiter regularly, why the hell would you own an M3????

There is such a sudden drop when you hit the limiter I can see why it might seem like an issue. The ECU throttles it pretty aggressively, keep an eye on those shift lights!
