Broken leg?
While driving through a parking lot @ roughly 10mph, I heard a loud pop followed by an "air-rushing" noise from from the front passenger side of the car. From there on out I have an audible rattling noise when the front pass. suspension is under greater-than-cruising load. My guess is that it might be an EDC failure of some sort, but I don't know exactly how the EDC system works (I need to do some homework).
I took it into the dealership immediately and got a 335xi loaner I am not too pissed because it's a new car with a new suspension/gearbox/engine and things will come up. I just wanted to share my experience with the board thus far and see if anyone else can provide guidance or ideas as to what exactly might have happened. - Patrick |

It drove fine afterwards just had the noise. I'm thinking its the EDC mechanism. I'm getting zero malfunctions... I'll update everyone when I hear from the dealer on Monday.

The EDC mechanism is just a motor at the top of the shocks that adjusts damping. It sounds like a completely blown shock.

gotta be a blown shock or another failure of a piece of the suspension. EDC failure is unlikely because 1) no warning and 2) if it failed you probably wouldn't hear a popping noise or the rushing air. tire was okay, right?

The tire is fine. Zero TPMS warnings. If it were a blown shock, I'd only have the spring holding me up? If it was a total shock failure, wouldn't it be more intrusive to driving?

Is this confirmed? I thought EDC worked on electric current flowing through metallic particles in the shock oil?

Funny enough, it was part of a tree branch stuck in an underbody panel. The wierd part is that the parking lot was entirely clear, which means I picked it up at another point - that I can't remember ever driving anything like that. The pop was part of it snapping, the air rush was the sound of it scrapping against something, and the rattle was it rattling off something under load.
Strange, somewhat embarassing, but I'm glad it wasn't shock failure. $19 in labor later and we're purring again |

Yeah, I visually inspected everything in the wheel well BUT the underbody. They stated it was pretty concealed anyway, needing to take off a panel to even remove the branch.

No, EDC system uses electrically operated valves, not ferromagnetic fluid.
