I have varied my driving habits greatly, but if I had enough room I'd be pounding to redline more often. I find that unless you are either in the middle of nowhere or driving consistently on the highway, it will be tough to fully wind up the car without driving excessively faster than the conditions allow.

The break-in guidelines from BMW are crap. It makes sense to keep it under 5500 rpm until 2000km but "no full throttle" is bs. Actually beeing too careful and e.g. drive it in D mode with cruise control is bad for the engine.
So my way of breaking it in is using it from the beginning in full extent with the only constraint of keeping it under 5500 rpm. After the break-in service I will continue with that but increase the rpm until 3000km. After that an M3 should be ready for track use. AFAIK no other car maker says break-in takes 5000km. Opinions? |

I am not so sure that the no full throttle is bs, as I think it is not the RPM that is that bad but pulling from 1000 RPM in 7th (6) gear to 5500 RPM. This will undoubtedly put excessive stress on the engine then with less throttle in the correct gear. Further this is probably much worse than an occasionally run from 5500-7000 RPMs.
But I do not get the 2000-5000 either.

That's not what I meant. I meant full throttle accelerations in 2nd gear from 2000+ rpm to 5000.

I think BMW's instructions for no full throttle and no past 5500 rpm is to break in the driver more than the car. The engine doesn't seem to have full power for the first couple thousand miles. If they can program that into the computer, they could certainly program a permanent 5500rpm redline that would only be removed after the 1200mi service.
That said I did as was told for the most part because I did need to be broken in.

I test drove an E92 M3 with 600 km for about 85km and I am sure that all the 420 EU horses was there, so I do not think that you should expect more power after the 1200 miles service......
But I also wonder why they did not just limit the throttle and the RPM's if this is so important. They could just allow anyone who wants it removed to get it reprogrammed at the dealer if they sign a warranty waiver.. And why break in the driver, there is so much electronics keeping this car on the road that even a 10 year old can drive it.

Of cause you are right but these cars are really eaiser to drive then any car in PGR4 so I would imaging that a 10 year old would do pretty well. Good luck and have fun on the ring...
