Let's hear it from switchers 335i to M3 Coupe

I have owned an '07 and '08 335i European Delivery. Now I am going back to Germany for the '09 E92 M3 Sep production, Dec redelivery. I love my 335i and I enjoy it everyday, torque is the word, great response even on 6th gear.
I have recently test drove a E92 M3 MT and to tell you the truth I didn't get the WOW!! effect that I've got when I first tested the 335i. I found it sluggish (please don't flame) I am the number one BMW fan. But, I was hoping for a push me to the seat 1st and 2nd gear. I didn't like the clutch either, every gear jerks like a mother....., I know it's a sports car and I could live with that.

Just wondering if anyone who traded their 335 for the M3 felt the same way.
I will be switching too so this is not a 335 vs M3 thread.

I can't wait to drive in the Autobahn again.

you were not wowed by your M the way the 335 wowed you- then why are you getting an M3 considering how new and better your 335 is?

I have always wanted to own an M car and it's time to trade in my vehicle again, I don't keep my cars for more than a year actually 10 months. The natural progression is the M3 that's why I wanted to hear from previous 335 owners and get their thoughts.

Hope I answered your question.

you have to wind it up to get the wow. Down low it doesn't feel that much different to a 335, but it keeps going and going. The neck-snapping feel comes from torque and the 335 has the same peak tho not at flat throughout the range, so you wont really get that unless you get a c63. honestly on public roads i dont think you're going to feel a big difference between the 335 and m3, but the overall package is what makes it compelling ie not just power but balance, looks, brakes kind of.

I never owned a 335 but I test drove a couple and actually went into the dealership to buy one... ended up with my M3 coupe instead and I'll never regret that decision. The 335 is no doubt a really nice ride, almost a well kept secret.

But the M, is just... WOW... it has everything the 335 does, plus (IMHO) better looks... better handling... better engine flexibility, (although the turbo 6 in the 335 is better for daily driving).

Plus no matter where I go and park it, people can't walk by the car without craning their necks to gaze at it a little longer, or stopping for a brief walk around... I'm sure that won't last forever, and you can call me shallow, but still I think it's pretty cool

i went from a e92 335i to a e46 M3 to a e92 M3

my feelings...

not being "wowed" like the 335... i understand this because of the 335s torque and the fact that its a balls fast car compared to previous generation 3's. I totally hear where you are coming from, but believe me, when you start making the M3 scream, its priceless! The wow factor going from a e46 325 or 330 to a e92 335 is WAY bigger then goin from a 335 to a M3. I dont think anyone will argue that.

after the e46 M3, i wasnt sure if i should get a new e92 M3 or a 335 (again). so i borrowed my friends 335 for a day. An hour or so was enough to persuade me towards the M3.

Even tho the 335 is a fast car, it does not behave like the M3 AT ALL! NONE! the 335 is totally a softie compared to the M3. Soft ride, soft steering, easy as f*ck to drive. The 335 is a very good adapter between the driver and the road... the M3 makes you think you own the road.

Even tho i havnt done it yet, i hear removing the clutch delay valve makes the clutch feel a LOT better. Something to consider.

The push you in your seat feel... again, this has a lot to do with torque and the fact that the M3 shines most around 8,000rpm. Have you taken it on the highway and ripped thru at least 4 gears to redline? or taken it on a serious canyon road? if you have and still dont feel spazmatic about the M3, then a 335 is a better choice for you

aside from that, 10 MFMPG. Thats what im averaging in the M3. My 335 got 15ish if i recall correctly.

hope that helps.

Here's my 2 cents.... I have owned 2 E36 M3's, an E46 M3, and currently have a 335i sedan manual sport package for my wife and just got the new M3 coupe in 6 speed for myself. We have had the 335i since December. The 335i is a total softy. While its a quick car and definitely a sleeper, there is NO COMPARISON to the M3. I'm not even past the break-in period and can tell you that this car ROCKS! I do feel that the M3 has adequate torque for me and it pulls ferociously in every gear. For some reason the feel and enjoyment of the car reminds me more of the E36, a car that I loved. I never got the same enjoyment out of the E46 and I'm not sure why. It might have been the disgusting rasp that came from the engine. Overall, the new M is an exceptional piece of engineering and one that makes me smile big time everytime I get behind the wheel. I can only imagine what its like after the break-in. Anyone that thinks the 335i can compete at all in terms of any performance measure, is day dreaming. In terms of build-quality they are both exceptional vehicles and you can't go wrong with either. It just depends on what you are willing to spend.

Same for me.
Test drove the 335i coupe and it sure was fast but nothing exciting.
M3, on the other hand, was just to die for. CA was pushing the M3 hard, but not passing 5500 RPM, and sound was making me . I didn't push the M3too hard since I was not comfortable driving manual car with 414hp but it was def. more fun than the 335i. Hence I got my M3 with DCT

Best response here so far IMHO. Thanks for that insight. I'm also coming to my E92 from a E36 but my dad has an E46 and I've driven it quite a bit, even on the track. The e46 never felt as connected as the E36. I truly always enjoyed driving the E36 more. Plus, mine was/is as fast as E46s at all the tracks I went to. E46 guys never liked when I passed them in my "older" car.

Also, I had a 335 as a loaner while my E92 was in the shop for its 1200 mile service. I couldn't get over how much the M3 and 335 felt different going down the road. It's hard to be believe they're built on the same chassis. The M3 feels so much more refined.

I think the 335 is a great great car for the ninety-percenters, for the last, hard core 10% you get the M3, that's it, two great cars, if you don't want the added precision, ability, agility, and hammer it for days at the track and have it smile back at you trait of the M3 there is the 335. It's what BMW intended.

Having said that, the M3 has more posing value if that's a criteria, no debating that. 335 and an M3 pull up to a light, which one does Joe Commuter point out to his girlfriend?

The wars get really tiresome. For those looking for an cheaper stoplight hero get a 335, chip it to an inch of it's little German life, add silly street wheels, bodywork and enjoy it.

I love the rasp! FYI...it's from the exhaust, not the engine.

....Great responses everybody!

Yes... there was something about that E36 that really made me excited. Despite the specs only saying 240hp, i'm sure that it was an understatement. That was a car that was so easy to predict and drive at the limit that I almost want to find another one and use it as a track car, but that would be financially irresponsible to the wife! On another note, I was a little bit worried about having two 3-series bimmers when I ordered the new M for myself. My wife was like: "Why do we need another car that looks the same?" After I got it (only 2 weeks ago), she quickly agreed that it was a totally different animal. For some more perspective on the subject, I traded in my E46 m3 3 years ago for a 987 S Boxster (which I sold to get the E92), which was an amazing car that gave exceptional driver feedback. I was a bit worried that I was going from a true drivers car to an overpowered GT car.... Not at all. The M blows it away. I don't think there has been another M car that so many people have given such compliments about in terms of its design, engineering and feel. Maybe I'm just an M3 fanatic, because none of the other M cars ever did it for me.

Although I was never crazy about the rasp, I have to say it was fun driving that car next to a barrier with the windows down and redlining it.

LMAO! It's good to know that I'm not the only one who enjoyed doing such a thing. I did the same thing next to buses too.

I recently got out of my 3 year lease of my 355 coupe after only one year. (cost me 3 grand) To purchase my M3. I loved my 335 thats why I was willing to take a hit and to get into my M3. The M3 is in a totally different league. Its better in every way.
Peeps keep talking about torque. I don't get it. Ya I guess the 335 has more pull at 1000 to 2500 rpms. But why does that even matter? I think the clutch is way better. I found so instantly on my test drive. Even if the 335 got mods out the ass to look like and be fast than the M3. Its still could never match it based on the V8 alone. The sound the feeling you get when you press the throttle is unmatched in my opinion. Not to mention it handles a thousand times better. In conclusion the 335 is a sweet car but no comparison to a M3 and if you think it is you just dont know better. I get my 1200 mile service on thursday I cant even imagine

Sound and feel had me sold. Had a 30 minute test drive, but thats fairly worthless. Need a car few thousand miles on it to really get the feel of the engine.

Watching a few on the track, and talking with the owners also helped close the deal. Different car entirely, in the end keeping both and switching off with the Mrs.

I testdrove both last week at my dealership.First the M3 then the 335. I testdrove the 335 many times before that, and it felt amazing every time,in terms of sound, torque etc...but believe me, that day, the fact that I drove both, one after the other, the 335 felt like shit!!And I wasn't the only one to think that, we were 3 in the car.The big Woww!! of the day was the difference between the 2 cars sound systems. So for all those who were arguing about premium sound, its 1000% worth it!!

The 335 is a fast GT for the steet; the M3 is a true sports car. The M3 is much more connected to the road, while the 335 tries to shield you from the disturbances and lets you ride comfortably.

Many people think that by modding a 335 (Chip, intake, coilovers, brakes, exhaust, LSD...), you can get a car that is as good as the M3 in terms of handling and performance. WRONG! 80% of the parts on the M3 is different, and there are many components that one can never easily modify (i.e. clutch, steering, COMPLETELY redesigned aluminium suspension-not just springs and shocks). You can never get a regular 3 to be exactly the same as an M.

Many car companies create their sports cars by TUNING their street cars. BMW M creates sports cars by REDESIGNING its street cars.

If 335 is smoked salmon, then M3 is salmon sashimi -- you can taste every bit of what it's like to drive.
