Engine Pinging????

Does your E9x M3 ping under light engine loads? I've noticed mine does on occasion, but only briefly....I suspect the gas the dealer put in was only 87 octane...since I doubt the dealer pays for premium (which is crappy 91 octance here in CA)..... I think some better gas should fix it...

I posted something about this awhile back, thinking I might have heard something that sounds like a ping too. I'm on 93 octane. I haven't noticed it recently but I have a fairly loud exhaust on now.

Did you ever have the dealer take a look @ it?

Nope, figured if my engine melted warranty would cover it. Plus I can't hear it with my new exhaust system

With all the new owners, let's get some more input on this.

Your car should still not ping, even with 87 octane. Knock detection system should prevent it

Stop The Ping

I didn't even look to see how old this thread is, so sorry but my advice may help others!

The truth be said is that California gas is a low octane rating for the M3 engine. Yes, it should hypothetically run ok with 91 but with a few miles on the car (mine being a 2009 e92 M3 with 70k) I have noticed pinging under only very light loads! What works to combat this issue permanently (and has work for me) is occasionally adding 2-3 gallons of 100 Octane. I usually do this every 4 or 5 fill ups but don't think it needs it that often (just my personal preference)! In my case, Los Angeles has a bunch of stations offering 100 octane at a steep price (just google it). But not as steep as the price of doing a valve job once its pinged itself to death! Also, DONT USE FUEL CLEANERS!!!! They only work as long as its in the tank
