Do you think DCT will outsell 6MT?

I wonder if the DCT will well outsell the 6MT for the M3 in the US? It's funny the US with the lowest percentage of MT cars yet forced 6MT on the M5 while ROW didn't want it. Now the table is turned with many prefering the 6MT in the M3. (at least many driving purists around here).

I believe Europe will buy more 6MT M3s but in the US where many Corvettes and 911s go with auto and many Ferrari, Lambo, Audi (go with the SMGs).

The DCT is a wonderful tranny, I don't mean to make this into a flame war or put the 6MT down, but I think the US will be all over the DCT like white on rice.

Do you guys think the DCT will catch up to the 6MT in sales? Have you noticed more people wanting one or the other?

I bet it ends up pretty even, rai. How many SMG II M3s were sold? Seems like I recall it being around 40% or so (?).

I'd wager that a large number of E90 sedans will be DCT. The fact that they have a 4 door available will make it a lot more appealing to everyone who was on the fence about buying a M3 before.

Maybe in the US but in Europe the estimated percentage of cars running proper manual gearboxes for the next five years at least is over 70% with DCT accounting for another 3%. Remember these figures are for all cars and not just BMW or the luxury brands where it's percentage will be greater but I still see the automatic accounting for more in this sector.

One area where it will make inroads is the sportscar market and especially the opentop sportscar market.

The problem is that few younger people know how to operate a stick, at least here in the US. Thus, with time, I think the number will trend more towards autos. The E46 SMG wasn't all that great. The M-DCT is in a position of greatness if some of the bugs can be worked out and it should even convert some 6MT enthusiasts that shied away from SMG. I'm betting the M-DCT outsells the 6MT over it's lifetime.

DCT will outsell 6MT for sure. i think it'll be like 35-65% kinda ratio. reason is altho M3 is built for enthusiasts but the reality of the matter snobs buy more M3's than enthusiasts. that's all for today

It will be interesting to see since most consumers have no idea about MDCT and it does cost a lot of money. The only people that seem to know about it are the people on this forum. Every time someone asks me about my M3 the first question is "is it stick?" and when I say yes, they respond "good."

for the record, I love MT cars and have driven since 1988 and have always owned at least one MT car.

I picked the DCT for a varity of reasons, mainly because I thought it suited the car and my needs/wants more luxury/sport.

But I can see a lot of people who dislike MT cars or don't drive MT cars going for the DCT as well.

I bet it will outsell 6MT, too. I may be projecting my own experience, though -- I am very much a MT guy, but I have been looking at the E90 M3 with DCT.

I would guess its far higher than that.....for example my dealer had only one M3 coupe when I ordered mine 7 weeks ago (a DCT coupe)...& its a 6MT...when I picked up my car on Wed they have 3 in stock...one vert, sedan & the same coupe???? All of them are 6MT

My dealer has about 4-5 6MT on the lot and no M-DKGs.
In the US the M-DKG will outsell 6MT by a big margin.
In EU, 6MT may hold as the #1 choice, but only time will tell.

For all U.S. M3's the SMGII vs. 6MT was almost 50/50....like 49.xx% to 51.xx%.

I'll bet that most M3 buyers know how to drive a stick just fine. Most aren't young kids, and most are enthusiasts who love to drive. Many will still choose M-DCT instead because they see the performance advantage, because they'd simply rather not have to use a clutch despite knowing how, because they'd prefer a car that the wife or others can drive more easily, or some combination of those. This will sell lots of M-DCT cars. But I still think only about 50% or so.
