Help! What happened to my wheels!?!?

Hi guys & gals,

I've noticed the following happening to the alloys on my 335d M-Sport and wondering what's caused it.. It seems to look like a rash, the surface does not feel bumpy, flakey or anything.

I know this forum is specifically for F8X but I'm concerned that this could also end up happening to my M4 which would lead to

Can someone please advise?

Thanks in advance!

That I don't know but most likely it's not cover by warranty

Caustic wheel cleaner?

Google - white worm alloys

Just for info my bro had this happen to an X5 twice and the wheels were swapped under warranty both times

This is a hugely common issue on the 403 style wheels - I had 3 wheels replaced under warranty after 2 1/2 years.

Looks like you have the 5 spoke 442 wheels and while he problem is less common on them, BMW will absolutely replace them under warranty.

Don't take no for and answer - best of luck.

Incidentally - this has been an issue with BMW wheels for decades!!!

The problem with diamond cut alloys - you only have lacquer on bare metal. I would rather have silver painted wheels any day. For day driving, they are much more hard wearing. As Mark says above, dealer will replace. I had all my 403m wheels replaced on my 335d and my 343ms on my M5 are to be refurbed under approved used warranty.

I have 598m wheels on my 335d GT & had them replaced under warranty at just coming up to 3 years old - as others have said - hugely common issue on diamond cut wheels - suspect most will have it to some degree after a few years - many just don't notice/care/think it can be replaced under warranty... Dealer will video wheels & submit to BMW for decision...

My 340i developed this issue on a couple of wheels just last month.
Never bothered to get dealership to rectify it as I knew the car would no longer be mine soon.

BCA collected the 340i last week & put it down as corrosion. I refuted the damage was not signed for.

Hopefully BMWFS over look this.

No (not yet) but had it with my 335 and X5 - both had wheels replaced under warranty (the X5 was less than a year old!)

I have my 335d booked in to Coventry BMW tomorrow for them to take a look at the issue. They have requested to keep the car for the day they want to carry out some "tests". I've noticed the issue forming on 2 other wheels so that makes 3 defective wheels now!

As its under warranty till October, I hope they will just replace all 4 - fingers crossed!

I will keep you posted

They just measure the thickness to ensure the wheels haven't been refurbed (recut).

Thanks MarkG_M3CP I have taken into the dealer for it to be inspected this morning.

I have been pre-warned that based on the level of general kerb damage I may need to pay them 20% towards the cost of the replacement wheels. I'm yet to find out if this is the case if its approved..

Is this normal?

Sounds reasonable to me.

Not when mine were replaced but I have heard this is the case now.

I guess they've been stung with replacing so many and become aggrieved that they are funding new wheels when the old ones have lots of damage.

I think that's fair TBH, the corrosion damage is repairable by dipping and re-lacquering, kerbing would require machining and he wheel can't be reused.

Don't forget, BMW don't manufacture them so the demand likely came from their supplier.

Well I had mine replaced in March, they had just introduced the new screening process where dealer videos/BMW decide and they replaced all 4 of mine foc. Apart from worming, 2 were perfect, 1 had kerb rash - nothing major, but 1 had a 2" deep gouge on the rim.

Personally I think I would dispute having to pay anything - you are not asking them to fix the kerbing or to replace the wheels, you are requiring them to deal with the corrosion under warranty. Fair enough if thy give you a choice of a refurb to fix corrosion foc or the choice of replacements with a charge (as you then have a choice) but, in my view, they shouldn't be asking you to pay to fix the warranty issue.

Took mine to be replaced only to be told my wheels had been refurbed! Still got original factory wheel weights on etc.

Dealer is useless
