Near Miss in my 2 week old E90 M3!!!
so, Friday night I'm driving around w/ a buddy and a power outage had taken out a bunch of stop lights around town. Not the "blinking red" type of outage, but the full blown dark intersection kind. I'm slowing down for one (slowing from about 50) and I notice the car behind me is getting closer fast. As I get my car down to about ~30 mph, the guy is right on me, and I can see in my rearview that there is NO glow from his brake lights. He doesn't realize that the darked out intersection...THAT EVERYBODY IS STOPPED AT...is a light, and is basically a dark 4-way stop.
So, realizing I was about to get the rear end of my brand new M3 crushed like an aluminum can, I did what any good new-car owner would do. I downshifted and blew the intersection. I looked in my rearview as I ran the stop and I see that he realizes at the last minute that it is a stop and locks up the brakes, ending up half-way in the intersection surround by a cloud of smoking rubber and people honking at him and swerving. WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was close. My buddy had one word..."DAMN." |

Close one. I'm glad we didn't have to see another one of those extremely painful Post-crash photo-shoots. Good job.

your city needs to get battery back up on the traffic signals.

Yeah, if there had been anyone in the intersection, I wouldn't have had the time to evaluate my chances of making it and would have just stopped and taken the beating. I was grateful that it happened when the intersection was clear, too!

You have just highlighted what I consider to be one of the biggest safety benefits of sports cars. In regular traffic, exceptional acceleration, handling, and braking coupled with an alert and competent driver, can save the day.
There have been several times when being able to count on my car to quickly accelerate at a moments notice has been all that saved me (and the cars around me) from a wreck, when someone else does something completely unexpected and dangerous. Congrats on making a good call! |
