replacing just one tire in the rear?
so I had a nail in one of my rear tire, and since I still had tirerack road hazard coverage, I was able to get a new replacement tire. Now the problem is, the other rear tire tread depth is about 7/32".(lower than I was expecting) since this is for the rear, I'm worried about running tires with two different tread depth. Any suggestions?

I know it might be slightly wasteful, but if I have a tire that is getting close to the wear bars, I just replace both. Some tires tend to get harder as they age and/or wear down. So that, coupled with being in the same axle as the newer and slightly larger (because it's new) tire will prompt me to not want to pair it.

i would suggest against shaving a street tire... spend money for a second new tire and have two new tires good for many more miles, or spend money to have a new tire shaved and take thousands of miles off of it just to have to replace it with another tire sooner? doesn't make sense.
also, by just replacing one tire, you are setting yourself up for always having one rear tire more worn than the other.

I'm actually considering shaving mainly because I'm not a fan of current tires (Conti) and just want to finish using up the current set and move on to something else. Spending another $300 for tire I don't particularly like isn't appealing though shaving a new tire seems wasteful. Another option is to just repair the nail puncture and return the tire... silly first world problem I have...
anyway, my main question is what is an acceptable tread depth difference between the rear tires that is considered safe in the drivetrain? |

might be worth a shot to call them and see if you can put the reimbursement amount towards a new set of tires if you order through them... you don't get what you don't ask for.

If it just a nail, why not just a patch plug?

"Hello, tirerack, you're never going to believe this, but I ran over TWO nails. One on each rear. I KNOW, right? Can you believe it?"

I got a new tire because the hazard insurance covered it. Apparently BMW and Continental advises against patching which means tirerack is on the hook for complete replacement. Also because I was considering tracking this year. |

Thieves are a “road hazard” sell the tires and say they were stolen right off the wheels in the middle of the night
