Transmission shifts to manual on its own
This is weird, last week I took my 2016 X5 40e for a routine maintinance and the dealer performed a software update. Since then, the following happened twice, on the highway the car stutters when shifting at higher gears and when I come to a complete stop afterwards the car is in manual shift mode. I didn't touch the shifter or the buttons to change the shifting modes. Any ideas or am I just crazy here???

After owning my 2017 X5 40e for 6 months of 100% flawless and loved driving...after BMW did "The Recall"...my 40e was crippled! So bad, that eventually BMW assisted me in getting a new "17 35d! So sorry you are having issues too. Mine was almost all entirely battery related and electric range. After the recall, my battery and electric range was at least 50% diminished. BMW could not get it back. Awful!!!

Sorry. While I loved the "mpg" I got on my 40e, I hated driving around in a 4 cylinder engine once the hybrid battery was depleted...and it really, really sounded like a 4 cyl. engine. The engine was not weak really, but I have always owned and driven 6, 8, 10 or 12 cylinder engines!
After transitioning into the 35d from the 40e, I can honestly say I do not love the 40e. |

It was very, very rare for me to not have a 0 or almost 0 battery. Only way was to put the 40e in Save mode..but then, that is driving in pure 4 cyl. gas. So, so, so do not miss the 40e!!! |

The X5 40e does not qualify in California for the HOV lane The i3 does. Mercedes S550e does too. Part of our HOV qualifications are how long the hybrid battery has factory warranty. X5 40e is well below most other plug in hybrids!!

With BMW, only these cars are ok - BMW 1 Series Active E, model year 2011 BMW 530e Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), model year 2018 BMW 530e xDrive PHEV, model year 2018 BMW i3 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), model year 2014 - 2017 BMW i3 REX (Range Extended Battery Electric Vehicle), model year 2014 - 20 https://www.dot.ny.gov/programs/clean-pass Note: Clean Pass stickers are required for qualifying single occupant hybrid vehicles to use any section of the LIE/HOV system. I really hope they will have better way and don't have to put that sticker on. So ugly. 40e only has $500 rebate in NY State. https://www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Progr...e/How-it-Works |

Even here in VA/DC Metro area, the main road I use is 66 and it will lose the hybrid exemption in 2021 when they convert the rest of 66 HOV lanes to ezpass. |

Saturday the svc rep called and he said German engineers are involved and they're coding one thing at a time in "iwrap" or "irap". To me that's sounded like code you didn't have an appointment and we will get to your car Monday since it's a hybrid and we have no clue we just tying stuff out.

Well in the past when I coded the car without paddle shifters with the Sport transmission without telling the car there were no paddles it would shift on its own.
Also they're using ISTA P to program it. Just a computer program the dealer uses to program the cars.

I picked the car up today and read the entire report of what they did. Basically they noticed a paddle shifting error (even though it does not have paddle shifters). So instead of just removing the sports+ mode, they programmed it multiple times, and they made sure to stress to me that they did it multiple times, as if they were doing me a favor. They basically took it back to the original configuration, only to remove the sports+ mode. I of course, re did the VO coding (to get the anti glare lighting features) and everything else I had except for sports+, on a hybrid it doesn't make that much of a difference. Needless to say three days at the dealer and driving in the non HOV lane was enough of a hassle for me. Thanks to all who helped and commented here. Things are back to normal now, thankfully, I learned how to code when I leased this car and kept the files on the only PC we have in this Mac family den. |
