10.5 vs 11 inch Wheel for same Tire

Hi everyone,

I'm curious to know what the pros/cons are of going with an 18x11 rim vs. a 18x10.5 rim, assuming they can both fit a 305 tire?

Other than unsprung mass, does having the wider rim significantly impact how traction via that same tire is delivered to the surface? I would assume so, but just wanted to see what you guys think.

I'm about to upgrade to stage 2 turbos and am also upgrading wheels/coilovers for a largely daily driven car with plans for autocross in the future. Thinking about TE37 wheels with 18x9.5 in the front with a 275 tire.

"Significant" is different for different people.

I couldn't tell the difference in grip between same tire mounted on 10.5 vs 11 inch wheel. Pretty sure the best drivers could.

Where is the cutoff for drivers who could and couldn't? Don't know.

I would suspect that proper suspension/alignment setup is more important than 10.5 vs 11 inch wheel.

In general, the more tire contact the faster the car can be (can you extract that performance is a different question) and for most if not all 305 tires the 11 inch wheel will give a bit larger contact patch.

It will fit, and depending on the tire, it could be pinched a bit. A 305 RE-71R runs narrow and looks just about right. A BFG R1 runs super wide and would be super pinched.
