Winter "transition" months

Just curious what you guys typically do when the temps are like 40-60s in October/November? Just throw on the winter tires a bit sooner and deal with the shitty ride even when it's like 60 out?

Winter tires at 60F?? Yes they lose performance in colder temps but that's closer to mid 30's. just make sure you don't gun it on cold pavement and you'll be fine.

A better driver will adapt to conditions.

I've seen people complain about the MPSS even in 50-60 degree weather.

That's terrible.

My winter tires go on when it has been sustained high temperature in the 40s for a full week, when more than 1 snowfall is expected, or the low temperature is in the low 30s for 1 week.

It tends to be either 2nd to 4th week in November where I live.

I'm 250 miles north of you in Michigan. I almost always used mid Nov. as my snow tire change time. X1 with M sport and summer only tires. I don't drive my M4 in the winter, but I still use mid Nov as my "put away" time.

Hi,
I put my winter setup a little early so I can wash and wax the wheels while it's still reasonable outside... in the Chicago area those conditions are usually present towards the end of October, beginning of November. Ultimately you will figure out what works for you, but putting winters on a little early is not that bad IMO. The summer tires become hard as bricks anyway and ride comfort along with traction suffers. Just my $0.02

Thanksgiving weekend is what I use. Unless unusually cold prior (40?s as highs).

I won't take mine off until it's down at freezing or below. I have driven in 15 degree temps in the morning to work. The Pilot's work probably better than many other tires at those temps, but you just know not to play around.

But once the temps get down to that level I start to watch for snow. Once the temps are consistently down there, it's time to bite the bullet and switch them out.

It's getting into the 40's here at night, but will drive on the MPSS's until we have a sustained temp below freezing, then I drive my winter car on those days. I did this last winter and the tires were fine. I just don't drive it when it's cold. I need to have a car to transport my dogs in anyway, so I just drive that car when it's cold, snowing, or icy.

Same case here. I haven't put my winter tires on until they were forecasting snow in the next 2-3 days for the past 2 years. I made it to Christmas eve in 2015 before switching! I've never had a problem with the MPSS in the morning when the temp is in the 20s.

Agree or disagree:

Rwd with good winter tires is better than AWD with all seasons

Stopping has nothing to do with RWD or AWD. It's all about the tires.
