Winter tires
Just purchased 2018 M3,
Now looking for winter tires, and I have these in mind: Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 245/45 R 18 100 R XL Tires Would these be a good size for an M3? Or should I just order from dealer and not risk getting the wrong size? Also, does anyone know how good these are? Thanks for help!!! |

Those are not winter tires, they are snow tires and I love them. Definitely would recommend for snow conditions. Although they are bit noisy compared to the typical winter tires.
I'm planning to go 18 inch as well with spacers. I'll be using my oem e90 wheels on the f80. |

Yes, this tire size fits M3 and it's listed as one of the choices in tirerack winter tire packages.
Your best bet would be to get a set from tirerack as they have cheap wheels and good selection of winter tires. Or have a look in tires&wheels classifieds section in this forum

You can't go wrong with the Nokian Happs. I wouldn't run anything else. I ran those on my last five cars and they were super! Tread wear was great too. Yes, a little more road noise but not an issue compared to the winter/snow/ice traction that you gain. I assume you're doing them all them on all four corners. If not, do so.

Wait, you're on Tire Rack and see Nokian tyres? I don't see 'em.

You can't go wrong with the Nokian's Hakkapeliitta range. There is some confusion here because most people believe that snow tires are only for areas where you experience snow. As if snow is not bad enough, it's the cold temperatures that will always catch you out first. I speak from experience, I live at 7 700 feet above sea level and, over the winter, tempratures are anywhere from below zero to 40F, combined with snow totals of around 600 inches (not all at once, obviously). If you research this topic you will understand that, even absent snow, you will lose 40 - 50% of your traction at 37F when using a summer or an all season tire. The rubber compound is the secret in snow tires, a compound is used that resists hardening in cold temperatures, therefore maintaining excellent traction properties. I am in my 10th year in this part of the world, and have used Blizzak's, Pirelli Scorpion, and the Hakkapeliitta's. All good tires, but the Hakkapeliitta is a stand out. Compared to Blizzak's they are, IMHO, twice as good, and about 20% better than the Pirelli Scorpion. In my personal experience, I have also found that the Hakkapeliitta's last a lot longer, more importantly, they provide a great deal of confidence in adverse conditions. You can't beat the laws of physics, no matter how good a snow tire you use, but for personal safety, I would give my vote to the Hakkapeliitta's. Here's the challenge; Hakkapeliitta's are difficult to source, but not impossible. You have to jump through a few more hoops to acquire them. Tirerack does not stock the Hakkapeliitta's, so I've found a good tire shop to order these for me. Beware though, if you just show up at your local tire shop, they will attempt to sell you what they have in stock, and while this is easier for them, you will not get the tire of your choice, more importantly, you will not get the best tire for your conditions, rather you'll get a product that the tire shop buys in bulk in order to make the highest profit for themselves, and your safety be damned. The Hakkapeliitta's are pricey, however, in my experience, they have lasted me two winters longer than the Scorpions or Blizzak's. Nokian is a Finnish company, the Finn's know all about winter driving conditions, and from my perspective, if a tire is good enough for the incredibly harsh conditions in Finland, then it's good enough for me. Nokian is, at present, building a manufacturing facility in the USA, so availability will probably get better with time and more people learning about their tires. Several winters ago, I needed to source a winter tire for my wife's Audi A7 with 20" wheels. Not easy, but not impossible. Nokian, at the time, did not have a winter tire in this size, so I opted for a Dunlop Winter Sport 3D. This is also an option for you as their sizing options are fairly vast, it's a very good tire and is also streets ahead of the Blizzak or Scorpion. In closing, I wish that there was legislation to compel drivers to fit snow tires in areas of the country where temperatures warrant snow tires, because your snow tire is only as good as the asshat next to you on the highway in his F150 with "all seasons tires" (we call them no seasons here). BUT, IMHO, you having a good quality snow tire fitted will be able to avoid traction issues when you see the unsnowed tire vehicles spinning off the road.
