E92 M3 steel slicktop roof

I was roaming carmax and found this car, no sunroof and no carbon roof. Looks like the side plastics are black so I'm guessing it was a carbon roof at some point. Very interesting.

I doubt it's steel. It's simply been painted.

Interesting. Is CARFAX or other vehicle history report available?

It does look nice painted. I still prefer carbon, though.

Wonder if it is a wrap?

Why not just run the VIN and see what roof it came with?

Autocheck is available, it shows 1 owner and no accidents. Nothing reported on the roof.

Would be cool if a factory steel roof SR delete as in 1 of 1 but I doubt it.

The VIN indicates it is has the S7MA Competition package, so somebody at some point painted the roof for some reason. May have simply been an owner preference, or may have been damaged and required repair. Who knows.... But they didn't paint the gutter rails to match, and that seems a bit strange (or just lazy?).

Yes, for sure a Carmax Tax. But then again, savvy buyers have never been the demographic Carmax appeals to, IMO.

Dean. I know that you know that the Competition Pkg. has nothing to do with the carbon fiber roof!

Correct, you could certainly order them with a sunroof. But AFAIK the only roof option with E92 S7MA was a sunroof if not the default carbon roof. Regarding the car in question- the CF roofs came with black gutter rails. If it were somehow a factory painted roof the rails should be white also, so all hints lead to it being a CF roof.

Did anyone happen to get a screenshot of the roof? Curious as to what it looked like.

There was no direct picture of the roof. The car was photographed at the classics sales angles. It basically looked like a 328 with a M3 body kit as you expect to see a moonroof.

There was also something funky about the wheels iirc.

clear seems to fail on the CF roofs pretty often, probably opted to deal with it permanently and had the roof painted to match.
