Favorite options to code
Hey all,
I'm going to get my car coded here soon as was wondering what codeso you guys have done that you like the most? Interior codes? Exterior like lights? Is there a list someone can send over if the ones they've done? I had one previously but cannot find it. Thanks for the info guys!

Coding-that's-not-quite-in-every-coder's-vocab favorites:
M2CS steering, M4 GTS diff, ZCP dampers, ZCP DSC+ICM My top 10 "Normal" coding features (that should be in every coder's vocab) favorites; these all have cheat codes: GFHB (if you're LED) No LED side markers (or incandescent side markers, if you're Xenon) B&O DSP Mirrors/windows w/ comfort access+keyfob & zero delay 5-flash blinker tap Ambient light independent from cluster light Easy entry Rear fogs Front "fog likes" via VLD Flashing 3rd brake light under forceful braking Last edited by packet pilot; 02-27-2017 at 03:51 PM.. |

I'm guessing the 'not so common' list of coding requires ECU's updated beyond 58.x? |

I'm on 57.x so I'm probably screwed until I update - I haven't poked around yet but I'm definitely on an old ISTEP. |

It is all personal preference. On one car, I code in a feature and the next I am asked to disable. I am partial the the classics:

I've coded both of my bimmers, and personally did not care for a single one of the above changes (tried most of them, reverted to stock setup on 9 out of 10. 10th one (flashing brake light) I don't see, so haven't bothered to fix just yet). Coding exposes a lot of new parameters to modification that are not accessible through iDrive. That does not mean that BMW defaults are bad, in fact, most of them are results of serious research and testing. Other settings are just amusing fluff (IMHO). The only universally good updates is removal of various legal disclaimer screens, lights, and alerts (seat belt, etc). Get your own cable, play around, make up your own mind! YMMV, a

The rest I can understand based on subjectivity, albeit begrudgingly, but to each their own. |

BTW, Xenons were a conscious decision after side-by-side comparison with dealer's LED cars. I really value the wider high beam scatter pattern that helps me spot the suicidal deer just that much earlier. Quote:
That's why I'm endlessly amused when I read someone insisting that everyone else has to adopt his settings. Most of the stuff is, like you said, highly subjective, and your preferences will evolve over time. I used to hate ASD (mostly because everyone on these boards told me so), then I got bored with the quiet car and turned it back ON, then off/on again. I'm not even sure which way it is now, and really don't care anymore. At all. Similar journey with easy seat entry - it was amusing for a week, then I got frustrated with it delaying my ability to drive off (seat takes too long to move), so I coded it back out. The only absolute "good" is getting rid of all the legal disclaimers and warning gongs, lights, and reminders. And the ability to go back and tweak your own settings at will. If I had paid someone to code this stuff for me, they would have been paid ~10x over by now YMMV, a

100% agree that buying a cable and learning the ropes are worth it; I'd go as far as saying the cable is by far the best mod for the money (even for those who value their time rather highly), especially if you get into more involved processes like I-STEP upgrades, DCT conversion flashes, and other conversions to ZCP/GTS/M2CS land. |
