Passenger Seat Belt Chime

This weekend I put my iPad in the car to serve up music. I set it on the passenger seat, and I started getting a seat belt warning. The iPad was the only thing on the seat, but somehow it set off the detection circuit.

It can't be the weight alone. The iPad can't weigh much more than a couple of pounds.

Any ideas as to why this would happen? Does the seat detect occupancy using heat detection? Any way to defeat this other than coding it out? I don't like the idea of coding out safety related items due to liability concerns.

Bah, it happens with my iPhone 7 Plus as well.

Really annoying, lol.

Guess it's everyone and not just me.

I have never had it set off with just a phone, but my 6lb laptop triggers sensor.

Coded off auditory chime for this reason.

Glad I found this thread. I've set various heavier objects on my passenger seat, but whenever I put my phone on there, it sets of the seat belt chime when driving.

It wouldn't be a radio frequency or bluetooth doing anything to the sensor, would it?

Not a huge deal since there are other places to put it, but it's very strange.

It is weight sensored and sometimes overly sensitive.

You must have a Phablet. My phone does not set it off, but 5 lb notebook does.

Easy enough and worth coding it off. You can keep dash indicator and get rid of annoying chime.
