M3 on the way - need advice on break in
I just joined this forum and ordered my M3 Sedan yesterday. It will be here in 45 - 60 days. For those interested, its pretty well loaded. My history is i owned a '99 M3, an '03 X5, and an '05 545 (SMG trans). Needless to say, i am very ready to get back into a smaller, more agile car as compared to my last 2 lease cars.
I am looking for some advice/details/recommendations on both what the break in period is (i haven't seen any details) and what to expect around performance changes early on. Specifically, i'm curious about brakes, transmission, gas mileage, throttle response, engine performance, etc. I'm also curious about break in of the stereo. Yes, of course none of you listen to the stereo as its a drivers car blah blah blah. I am also a audiophile so the stereo is important to me. If any of you used the stereo enough (and care enough about audio) to give perspective on break in and quality of the Enhanced Premium Audio system or have any links further describing this i'd appreciate it. The info from Lucid and one other recent post was helpful so you guys may be able to give more detail. Thanks in advance for the help. |

The break in information was on the windshield of the car I test drove. I'm expecting the same on the car I get.
Regardless, from memory I think its: under 5500 rpm and 106 mph for the first 1200 miles. under 136 for "sustained periods" for the first 4,000 (or so) miles. There might have been something on there about no WOT under 1200 miles, not sure if I remember that or not. If you search people are always talking about the break in around here. |

and put it in various gears and RPM (not to exceed max breakin RPM)
it helps to make sure the engine part (valves/rings/etc) get properly seated. A properly broke in Engine, will not consume as much oiil as the one that was mistreated from the start

I've never heard of proper break in of audio componets. I'm curious to see what folks say on that one.

Break in of audio components is a common discussion in the audiophile circles. The most obvious are speakers that have moving components (the speaker cone and gaskets). However, almost all equipment performs better after breakin, even electronics cables. On less expensive gear you are not starting with high enough quality sound reproduction to notice.

Audio speaker break-in is debatable. There are tons of topics on this...just google it. I personally do think it makes a little bit of difference on extremely high end equipment. Primarily because they are built to more exacting tolerances. The sound tends to get a little richer & warmer over time and less tin or tight sounding. I think normal use at moderate to low volumes for the first 25 hours of usage (time spent playing music) is sufficient break-in.
I don't want to hijack your thread but you mentioned transmission in your original post. Is there any special procedure for the LSD? My car will be arriving in about 2 weeks and I want to make sure I get everything broken in properly right from the start. Thanks. |
