URGENT: new car front bumper got scratched. How much discount should I ask for?

Hey guys,

i was about to take delivery of my M3 and was told that the front bumper got a peanut sized scratch, and is now being repainted.

so, i am pissed. What kinda discount should I ask for?

Where did it happen? It would have already been taken care of at the VPC if it happened in transit to there. If it were me, I would tell them to sell it to someone who doesn't care about original paint and order me another and we'll try this again. My M3 is going to be a weekend car, not a daily driver so I feel differently about it. It would be nice if they could swap fascias with another MR M3 though - that would be acceptable unless the color was off by too much. Sorry to hear about your car. Hope it works out well for you whatever you decide to do.

No discount will be given if paint job is good. And they usually do it very well.

It's really a personal decision that might be different for a lot of people. Only you can answer really according to what is important to you, etc.

I waited 5 months for a car once and it had six dents in the hood from being too close to the car above it on the car carrier. It came in on a Saturday and I took it home for the weekend and then brought it back to be fixed on the following Monday. They replaced the hood and I took the car but it was never really the same. The hood had to be redone four years later while the rest of the paint was fine.

Never again. It may not stay 'perfect' but it's going to start out that way.

I had ordered aluminum trim on my E90 and waited three months for my car. When I received it with wood trim instead the dealer gave me a $200 discount.

That's a little different situation. The trim can be easily replaced without any consequences. Are you saying they gave you the discount for your trouble and replaced the trim for you?

Not sure what to tell....Same thing happened to my Range Rover 6 months ago when I bought it. The rear passenger door had about the same size scratch and I obviously had them repaint the door. I was worried about fading and it not being painted by the factory but they assured me it would not fade and look great. Although it has only been 6 months, it still looks great. I have in writing from the dealership that they are responsible for future painting of the vehicle should it fade or look different from the rest of the vehicle. I feel your pain but they should be able to do a very good job.

Damn that sucks. Would you rather they told you or they just repainted it. I bet you'd sleep better if you had no idea.

And $200 for the wrong trim? No way. I would have asked for much much more.

The manager offered $500. I guess I will just take it. Its not perfect, but any car will get scratched at some point anyway. Might as well get an early start. Lol

A little but,

A few years ago at the BMW dealership, I was test driving a 545i and I backed into 3 series...both very superficial "scratches"...but still needed painted...and I offered to pay, but they did not accept...

So, I guess that I got one coming my way

Because of diminished value of the car for not having original paint. It's a big deal to some who understand the difference between factory and refinished. Some don't mind or just don't care, that's why it's really a personal question only each individual can answer for themselves.

beware, many dealers use the cheap bodyshops... my bumper was scratched at the dealer and they needed to paint it 3 times before i said enough, i am taking it to my own bodyshop. bmw does have a number of "approved" bodyshops across the country.

I would request that they remove the front fascia to paint it. They probably will anyways, but doesn't hurt to ask. That keeps the edges neat and keeps over spray away from your vehicle. I'm sure they will do a good job. The color will match fine because they will only apply enough to cover the spot, and then re apply clearcoat to the entire piece. Good luck with your car.

Yeah they did remove the bumper. Now the car is sitting there naked. Can't wait to see her when she is all dressed up.
