Importance of tire age?
Looking at several used winter setups and many of the tires unsurprisingly have DOT codes indicating they're several years old. A friend tells me 6 years or more is too old, no matter how much tread remaining and no matter how stored? Any thoughts? Some of the deals look great, but if the tires are no longer good due to the aging of the rubber, etc., then I need new tires and it no longer makes sense to buy the used setup. If a winter tire has lots of tread but was manufactured in 2011, for example, how many (safe) seasons do you think it has left? Thanks in advance!

Most things I have read say 6 years as rubber does degrade with age - exposure to UV, heat, oxidation and plain and simple wear & tear. This is even when it is in storage and not on a car. Aged tires (or any rubber) becomes harder and brittle (just like hoses). They won't grip as well as when new either.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
