A few questions on winter setup for F82
Hi guys,
My 2017 M4 is on it's way after ED to PCD. It's got standard breaks (so I get the correct wheels that fit). I am looking to get a set of snow tires/rims for winter as I always had with my E92. Below are some questions I have, thought maybe some of you folks can help me get some feedback/answers. 1. Is it ok to go with a square setup? I am thinking square so that i can rotate them better, and keep the tread life longer. 2. I've had Blizzak LM-22s on my e92 328i, and no issues, but an M4 is a bit different on power, but I don't play to do crazy corning in WI winter here. Should I get studless winter tires like Michelin X-Ice Xi3 or performance winter tires like BLIZZAK LM001? 3. Anyone own the Alutec Drive Rims (18x8)? They are supposed to be "Machined w/Black Accent", not sure if these are similar to the design/look of the BMW 437M Black alloys which the car has on now. I can't seem to find any real life photos. 4. I am not sure if I want the TPMS installed for about $200 because these are not RFT , and I can just monitor pressure. Does that mean I will have the annoying tirepressure light on? I don't mind the light, but are there any other lights/warning beeps that stay on if I don't install them? Thanks in advance for the help! |

I have a '15 M3 with the 19s and PSS tires. For my winter set I went with a square setup on 18s, Rial P10 wheels (they were cheap and look decent enough) and Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 tires. I live in the Seattle area, so snow was less of a concern for me. It's mainly cold temps and wet roads, and the very rare snow, that I have to deal with.
After two seasons I've been really happy with the Alpins. Great wet traction! I went with the square setup so I could rotate the tires. Car rides great on them. Disclaimer: I have yet to drive in anything more than a dusting of snow. I did spend the $$ on TPMS, mainly because many tires shops won't do the work unless you have it. I don't know what the car will do if TPMS is not present. Hope this helps. -X- |

A square set up is fine. I run 245/45/18 on 18x8 rims all around. As to what tire, that depends what you intend to drive in. If you'll only drive in the cold/wet or 1 to 2 inches of snow a winter performance would be fine. If your M4 is your daily and you might need to drive in 4+ inches of snow you'll want a studless snow and ice tire. I have the x-ice tires and never got stuck once last winter in up to 6 inches of snow/slush.

I will use it as my daily, and it's a good 50miles of driving daily. We get slush , snow, rain, and very low temps in WI. So I might need to do X-Ice. How was the durability of the X-Ice, how much mileage do you think you will get out of them? |

The x-ice may be a little better in the snow but when it come to driving in the cold & dry the pa4 should be much better.
I've read the x-ice can be a bit squirmy. There is a thread m3post about the 2 with some drivers that have had both. |

The Michelin PA4 isn't imported in 255/40-18 to North America, unfortunately. They do import a 255/35-18, however. Does anyone know if a 255/35-18 tire will fit on the 9x18 and 10x18 OEM 513M wheels (or any 9x18 and 10x18 wheels)? If so, is anyone actually running this tire?
The other option seems to be to try to order the 255/40s from Europe and hope they make it through customs.... |
