CCB - Pads look baked! Is this normal?
Hi
Please see attached picture of my brake pads on my Ceramics Barkes, they look pretty baked to me. Its been in to the BMW dealer and they say that the pads have glazed a little due to to excessive heat and are waiting for BMW GP to advise what to do as they are squealing. I have done a track day followed by a 3000 mile rally through Europe with a full boot and co-driver which took its toll somewhat, however, at the end of the day this is why i bought CCB, so i could drive it hard! My main concern is that the pads aren't damaging the discs. Anyone have a view on this and whether i should just replace the pads? Many thanks Shane |

Gnarly!
Regardless I think it wouldn't hurt to change brake pads.

I think if you replace the pads you're good to go. Those pads are terrible looking! The brake discs are extremely hard to abrade, so I suspect the rotors are fine.

I don't see anything wrong with these pads. They just look like pads that had a good workout. Albeit it is on the iron rotors, my Pagid RS29 look very much like that after a few track days.

Brake pads are supposed to heat up, and if you really cook them, they look like that. They are still useful as is. The comment on the rotor not wearing if you change pads at 50% makes no sense at all. Friction is friction, regardless of how old/new a pad is. |

CCB rotors wear differently than iron rotors. The fibres inside the matrix oxidize with high temperature which progressively loses mass. It's the reason CCB have a minimum weight as a wear limit. The theory is that thicker pads will transfer less heat into the rotors thus prolonging their life; hence the recomendation to replace CCB pads at 50% wear when used at the track. This amplifies the cost of tracking CCBs even further.
