Serpentine Belt + Overheat
At the track a few weekends ago I got:
"Charging System Malfunction" followed by idrive indicating Overheating and the car going into lymp mode. In the pits it was clear the serpentine belt had shredded. After having it trailered to my dealer they tracked down the root cause as a seized idler pulley. Since then they have been chasing check engine codes for the overheat and then a vacuum leak. It appears the vacuum leak was being caused by a bad crank seal which has been replaced. Today they dropped the oil pan and found parts of the belt in the oil pan, "but it did not make its way anywhere else in the engine". Any theories and what happened here? I am not sure I am comfortable with we changed your oil and filter now you are good to go. Car is stock with 15K miles on it. September 2014 build. Thanks for your input/advice. |

How does belt make its way into the oil pan
Wonderful how the service dept. states it did not make it to other areas in the engine.... don't you just want to give them a punch in the junk when they treat you like your an idoit. If you plan on keeping the car My advice would be to get BMW NA involved and push for an extended power train warranty due to foreign particulate in the engine. If its a lease F**K it.
