will X5 break in emergency for me no matter what
Sorry if this is dumb question. Our 2014 X5 is equped with Driver Assistance, Driver Assistance Plus with ACC + Stop and Go. My question is: Do I have to have ACC turned on all the time in order to keep me protected from unforeseen circumstances. This is car my wife drives and want to make sure it will always break to a full stop if someone cuts through so closely or if she is not able to stop the car and collision is imminent .

You don't need ACC turned on for the car to brake for you in an emergency.

I believe there is a 10MPH delta limit (if you are approaching more than 10MPH over the upcoming vehicle it will stop). At least that's what the dealer salesperson told me last night.

I tried the other day and let the car goes very very close to the car in front of me. No warnings, no stops...it was kind of scary. What am I doing wrong here. What settings needs to be activated.

Theres a setting allowing you to adjust the distance you want the warnings to go off in. Mine works crappy anyway, it doesnt go off when needed and does so now and then on tight, twisty European city roads as it cant always determine whether Im about to crash into a car or just narrowly avoid a parked one.
So dont overtrust this. IMO, its still a tech gimmick to satisfy car journalists, making people less alert than they should be. Yet everyone seems to believe that self driving cars will be ready to take over the world next year. |

I would check the User Manual out to be sure on the 10mph limit. Plus, if you step on the gas pedal and accelerate while getting closer to the object in front of your car, BMW assumes that you take control of your car and the car will not brake for you and/or interfere with your control(this is a good safety feature). I would see the emergency brake as a secondary tool for your safety. (corrected)

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicle...stant.html#t=l Driving Assistant. The Driving Assistant package combines the camera-based systems Lane Departure Warning and approach control and person warning with light city braking function. The Lane Departure Warning detects lane markings and alerts the driver to an unintentional lane change at speeds above approx. 70 km/h by means of vibrations in the steering wheel. The warning is not activated if the lane change is deliberate, that is, when the indicator has been activated. Whereas the approach control warning with light city braking function detects vehicles, the person warning with light city braking function reacts to pedestrians. If a vehicle ahead brakes heavily, the BMW responds immediately when the approach control warning is activated. The system operates in steps. A warning symbol is first displayed, then the symbol begins flashing and an acoustic warning is emitted, and finally the brakes are lightly applied (when travelling at speeds under 60 km/h). The person warning operates at speeds between 10 and 60 km/h and emits a single-level warning in the event of acute danger. If the system warns of a potential collision, the brakes are simultaneously preconditioned for a faster response. In the event of an emergency, the system applies the brakes. This function can be limited by darkness and fog.
