"flush"

Why does (almost) everyone refer to changing transmission and differential oil as a flush? There's nothing being flushed. It's the same as changing the engine oil. Why don't people say they flushed their engine oil?

Flush:
"A transmission flush is a maintenance process where all of the oil in a transmission is removed, new oil (and sometimes cleaning solutions) is run through it using a special machine to push out grime and sludge and then it is filled up with new oil. The process is used to remove debris and sludge and replace 100% of the used oil with fresh, clean quarts."

Why do some parts of the world call it a boot rather than a trunk when it clearly looks more like a trunk (chest) than a boot (footwear item)? Why are these the types of threads being created on M3Post these days?

At least in the case of the trans, to FLUSH it properly you actually have to run a pump rather than just letting it drain, so that more active process could be part of it.

Why do you say flush the toilet instead of change the toilet water?

To answer your second question. Isn't this the "general discussion" section of the forums? For general discussion? I've read at least 10 people this morning say they got their diff/tranny flushed. Just wondering why people say this and why they don't say they got their engine oil flushed.

As for the using the pump on the transmission, how is that flushing?

"A transmission flush is a maintenance process where all of the oil in a transmission is removed, new oil (and sometimes cleaning solutions) is run through it using a special machine to push out grime and sludge and then it is filled up with new oil. Ok yes, this is the general discussion thread, but honestly what sort of discussion were you expecting here? You're asking people why they call things what they do, and the reason is just....that they do. I suppose you're right that flush isn't technically the right term for this procedure, but I'm sure people talk about stepping on the gas in their Teslas as well. You've observed a curious behavior, and that's really all there is to it. There isn't really anything to discuss on a topic like this.

I was simply curious why people referred to a fluid change as a flush. Hence my first question in the first line of my post. Sorry you've had to respond to me so many times!

No, I think your point is perfectly valid. There is a very big difference between a flush and a drain + refill. If people want to be obtuse and argue for no reason, well, that's the Internet for you. I guess the pushback is to the effect of, "what do you want us to do about it?"

With the toilet my favorite is the dry dock. Upper decker funny but the execution is difficult.

If you run cleaning solution and/or fresh oil through the motor BEFORE adding in the final amount, then you're flushing the engine oil. I denno. I've always been under the notion there was a difference.

You are 100% correct. Yay! Here's an E30 for you

Normally you only do a flush if you find lots of metal/contaminants inside engine/tranny/diff etc.

They're referring to the flushing of one's wallet due to the M tax
