F80 m3 vs e90 m3. Engine question.
I've read some posts about how there is no love for the turbo charged inline 6 in the new m3. My question is why??
I would rather have the turbo charged engine vs the v8. I just couldn't afford a new m3. I'm coming from Audi though so I get the enthusiast part of M and always wanting a NA engine. I do think it's kind of strange though how bmw has the power button or has the engine noise come through the speakers. |

I think you took a wrong turn somewhere. Try the F80 forum.

tracking + reliability
if you are tracking + using it as it's supposed to be used properly, you'll find NA much more reliable and easy to maintain than a turbo car oh wait, you came from audi nevermind

OP has a total of just 61 posts and has already created 20 threads. Dude.... Try Googling with "site:m3post.com" appended to your search terms. It's a useful tool for finding something that you know/suspect is on a particular site, which it probably is given how old the E9x M3 forum is now.
To answer your question, test drive and see what you like. Some people love the sound of a V8 that revs to the stratosphere and doesn't have turbos clogging up the exhaust sound or fake noise being piped through the stereo. And they don't care about the lower torque enough to offset that preference, especially since at the track or whenever hanging out on the higher rev range, that torque deficit is basically non-existent. And as has already been said, BMW doesn't have a great track record on turbo reliability overall so far, and that plus temperature concerns make turbo cars in general less desirable particularly for track duty. In fairness, I haven't seen any limp mode complaints from F8x cars on track, although I also haven't looked too hard.

Yeah man. I'm totally not complaining. I love the look of my car and it's great. Like I said before. The newer m3 wasn't in my price range. But just curious about the hate for the twin turbo car

Wait... This is shaping up to be a legit question? Well since you're asking here, we'll tell you how the S65 V8 is a masterpiece, a pinnacle of naturally aspirated German engineered motors. The throttle response, smooth revving to 8400, induction and exhaust noises, flat torque curve, and power climbing into redline make for a truly exciting power plant. The S55 has torque and power but otherwise no desireable characteristics that get us excited. And don't even start with the sounds. Yuck. We could also talk about exterior and interior proportions, design, etc.
Now if you ask in the F80 forum, they'll say the E9x is slow, has no torque, gets terrible MPG, is attached to a poorer performing chassis, and is totally outdated all around. |

Because the S65 is magical, it won international motor of the year a number of times. Turbos do not have linear power bands and are susceptible to heatsoak on a track. I drove the new m, nice but not much better imo, the engine definitely not better
Motor trend put out an article yesterday with some pretty good choices. Yes... the S65 is most certainly included BMW S65B40: V-8 (2007) "It’s so cliché, but this has to be one of our top choices. If the GM small-block receives the award for the best simple V-8, the BMW S65 has to win the complicated V-8 award. Four cams, eight throttle bodies, variable everything timing, and 8,400 rpm. Its output (414 or 444 hp) is impressive, its torque curve is as flat as a Kansas interstate, and its compression ratio is high enough to burn diesel (12.0:1). But it’s the haunting, rich sound of this V-8 that is its defining characteristic. Horror-movie soundtracks wish they could raise neck hairs like this engine can. The most horrifying thing about this engine, however, is that it’s a high watermark that BMW shows no interest in beating." http://www.motortrend.com/news/motor...ine-hall-fame/ Last edited by 8k4; 06-01-2016 at 09:29 PM.. |

Because it shares the motor with its lower counterparts, so it's not that exclusive. Just swooped up.
Has a horrible exhaust note and tried to cover it by fooling us with sounds coming out the speakers! So who's the fool now? But honestly, i still want a f80, it's truly a badass car, despite it not being as entertaining (which i got from a few test drives) as the s65. |

Stereo amplified sound to cover the lack of actual performance sounds from the engine bay and exhaust? No thanks. Fearsome torque compared to the E9x, I get it, but I want authenticity. Qualifier - This coming from a guy who lives in the snow belt and drives a non-traction controlled, rear wheel drive S2000 all winter long. Authentic, connected, real. |

same reason there would be massive hate on rennlist if GT3s starting doing all turbo. its not what this car is supposed to be a about and not really the market for this car. why do you think todays "american muscle" either stay NA or Supercharge? for no other reason other than people buying a GT350 dont want it. my question is if you want lackluster small turbocharged BMW why did you buy an equally priced 335 and blow our NA M3s away? you could be owning those straight line stop sign runs!
