Warranty or rod bearing

I have a warranty purchased from BMW that covers engine and transmission up to 125k miles or 5 years and I'm about one year into it and at 60k miles.

Option 1 - I can cancel my warranty and get my prorated purchase back which will cover cost of rod bearing replacement.

Option 2 - Don't do rod bearing and keep my warranty, and IF rod bearings ever do go bad warranty kicks in.

both have it's pros and cons and I've been going back and forth between the two options.

How much do you drive? How long are you keeping the car? Does the warranty cover throttle actuators?

i opted to keep my bearings and get a warranty. the warranty is already paying for its self- had a temperature sensor go out and it was a $1,200 service and i was out the $100 deductible. bearings are just bearings. warranty covers bearings and other stuff. it was a no-brainer to me.

Drive it just on weekends. Keeping car forever. No actuator would not be covered.

how do you know the throttle actuators aren't covered? is there a higher tier of warranty that you could buy to cover more?

You already bought the warranty, so what is driving you to change it? Why can't you do the bearings regardless of warranty and just keep the warranty?

Yes that crossed my mind too. But then what's the point of having the warranty if I have to pay out of pocket $2k for rod bearings, then $2k for actuators, where does it end?

Driver her more and she will break less... The worse thing for the car is to sit, unless you just don't have an option...

Keep the warranty... Mine paid for a new engine!

It ends once you get a better warranty. How would warranty not cover rod bearings or actuators?

Chose warranty (7yrs/100k), will do bearing change after that, if indeed bearing change proves to be the solution. the next 2-3 yrs should put to test the opinions and theories on how after market bearings are better.

I'm not someone that would want my engine replaced. First, engine replacement could be done by monkeys, introducing other problems. Second, you're getting an engine with stock bearings. If it's truly the clearance, you have another ticking time bomb under the hood.

Warranty I got covers specifically engine, transmission, and ecu. So outside of engine like water pump, actuators, fan would not be covered. Covers things like pistions, rods, cams, internal engine stuff. So this warranty was about $3200 and the higher tiered one was like $5k that covers pretty much everything. Chose the $3200 one since I can afford to pay for such things outside of the major engine components, but I can't afford to pay for a $30+ complete engine.

my warranty would cover rod bearings but not actuators. the guy before said why don't I keep my warranty and just do my rod bearings out of pocket. I could do that, so rod bearings around $2300 plus actuators again at $2k just for parts alone?

Are you into the warranty at all? How much can you get back? I'm the type that don't believe in warranties. I feel if something happens, then I'll just out of pocket for it. Warranties exist to make them money so the odds are in their favor. I think you are thinking in the right direction.

depends on what an individual uses their car for. i don't daily drive my car anymore, but when i do drive it, it is on the weekends or to the track. i'm about 95% sure my warranty is going to pay for its self over the next 4.5 years (already covered $1,200). i'm sure more crap is going to break before the warranty is up.

better idea..

1. Cancel warranty = mod money
2. Worry about rod bearings *if* something happens = win

Seriously.. the chance of you havin any issues are slim and none. just drive the car and stop worrying about it. too much hysteria on here. there's a friggin bearing thread every hour now.
