Spare tire suggestions?

Looking to get away from run flats. Any suggestions to a cheaper alternative then buying kits that sells for $430?

Using tire sealant is a cheaper option but not as reliable. A lot would cost between 50-150 depending on the brand.

You could always just hope you don't get punctures. Worked for me for 6000 miles or so (so far).

Anyways I have spare now for long trips. Safe investment. To save money, just get the wheel. Buy iron and jack from someplace else.

Tire sealants work, but not reliable for really big punctures or blowouts. Also if ruins the TPMS sensor.

There are TPMS safe sealants out there, and I have a whole kit in the car. This is the kit content: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1040108 These kits are good for a bind, and small punctures. I also carry the plugs in the link. They can seal larger punctures, but you will need a strong pair of pliers to pull out the lodged-in object. None are a true substitute for a spare.

I replaced the run flats on my 550 and X5 at the time of purchase. Spend the money and buy a spare and jack. I have put a spare on my 550 on the side the road twice in the last couple of years. Both from hitting a pot hole and destroying the tire/rim. I also learned the hard way that the lug wrench in the BMW jack kit has a 45 degree angle on the end and is almost worthless if your lug nuts are torqued on at factory spec. I bought a 16 inch breaker bar and good plastic coated socket and have them in each vehicle.

Tire sealant and plug kits are worthless if you bend a rim, damage a sidewall, or slice a tire with road debris. Have you ever watched someone plug a tire? You are kidding yourself to think you can get on the ground with the tire on the car, pull out road debris, and then plug the tire and inflate it. What if the tire is completely flat and the rim is on the ground when you pull over and the debris is under (or on top of) the tire...how are you going to plug it?

Spend the money, get a spare.
