The-2016-bmw-x5-and-x6-will-get-a-touchscreen-lcd

I wonder if this will be available as an update on the existing cars...of course, the display will have to be changed...

You'll probably be able to get iDrive 5 flashed via coding as a retrofit to existing F15/16's. The touchscreen would need new hardware.

I do not think I would like touch screen. I can easily operate the current I-drive without leaning forward or changing my seating position. With touch screen would I need to lean forward?

Based upon what I have seen of the 7 series sedan,s I would expect you to to continue to control iDrive via the iDrive controller in the center console. The touchscreen adds a second means of interacting with the iDrive rather than replacing the dial control.

I don't care about the touch screen but would love to get the new idrive 5.0 design, have to be honest about that (to myself)

+1. I would rather BMW implement our touch I drive knob to be used as touch pad similar to how we use our laptops. The tech is already there with our cars anyway.

Doesn't it seem early for an update? I would have thought they wait for the 2018 model year.

I'm OK with a touchscreen as long as we don't lose any functionality from the iDrive knob/dial/puck. I'm not worried on that front as the videos of iDrive 5.0 that I've seen show both in use.

For example:

I'd definitely like the iDrive to include a full cursor that's controlled from the existing touchpad...but I haven't found any evidence of that yet. A few other manufacturers are using touchpads already so I would hope BMW isn't too far behind.

With the XC90 and the Q7 both being new models this year, BMW could be making incremental changes to 2017 X5 ahead of an LCI 2018. That's just a guess though with what little information I've seen. Adding the iDrive 5.0 might be an easy upgrade to help show that they're not lagging behind the competition. I'd hope for 6WB to make it in as well (even just as an option!) but I'm not putting any money on that.

It's odd that BMW would introduce new hardware and more functionality during a model year. Why not just wait till 2017?

Maybe athanyel is right. Keeping things on par with the competition.

I would love touchscreen. I don't use the navigation often but it would be nice to have a choice of typing an address.
It would also making scrolling through menus easier.

Dirty screen would be really annoying though

After nearly buying a Volvo XC90 I can say a touch screen isn't something I'm interested in. After cleaning the screen THOROUGHLY prior to an extended text drive, the screen looked filthy. Not interested in this feature.

Again, I am not interested in the touch screen either and for sure I would not inform my kids there is such a feature . What I would like to know whether idrive5.0 has better graphics, higher resolution (on our 10 inch screen - not the 7 of course which has a higher resolution on a bigger screen) and whether the actual navigation has better graphics.

I would not mind having the new main menu, that looks pretty cool.

Hope anyone here knows more about the idrive5.0 from the 7 series.

I´m also not a fan of smudgy touchscreens. Always been very pleased that BMW has not gone this way. Until now.

This would make no sense in a mid-year update

And I was never a fan of touch screens on cars. They never seem to be any good at all. Not to mention I would be wiping the screen every five seconds.

As I said earlier a touch pad on our drive knob would be pretty neat.

Yes... we do but it only works for navigation input.

I was suggesting that BMW should implement this to work on all of the iDrive functions.

The report might have the model year wrong. I'd guess that "late summer" actually means August and the first of the 2017 models.

It is coming this summer for F15/F16.....I sat in the 7 series and used the controller. I had no idea it had a touchscreen. In that case the dual contorl will be a plus.
