Diesel is the new hybrid
US$2/gallon for diesel here in Washington State and I'm getting an average of 37mpg on a 170 mile drive. This pic is my drive from Portland to Seattle this morning in my 2014 X5d with just over 30k miles on the odometer, driving 100% in Comfort Mode (not Eco!). Why buy a plug-in hybrid? I wonder what MPG my alter ego (WWI French fighter ace) got in his SPAD S.VII biplane.

Sure, if you're driving regularly on the highway and looking for efficiency, the 40e isn't going to help after the first 20 miles, and diesel would be the way to go if you're making frequent long trips. But if you have a relatively modest commute of around 20 miles one way or make short trips -- which BMW's own research identified as a sizable demographic -- the 40e can be an attractive option.
Rene, I'll take your 36.9 mpg, and raise it -- actually more than double it!

Have you seen this?
Many have over 40mpg (US gallons). Also the 40d and the m50d have results that are just amazing. Some light footed trips on 35i have also produced great results. http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1081659 I wish I had time to update the the thread with your posts above, especially the 40e post. However, a minimum of 15-20 miles would be a fair test distance. |

The BMW diesel drivetrain is absolutely brilliant. We need to keep preaching the gospel to counter the negative perception that VW has created.
I tell everyone I can that my X5 35d is by far the best family vehicle I've ever owned (and I've owned family vehicles long enough to have grandchildren).

A diesel hybrid would be the best of both worlds. Diesel for long trips and electric around town.

While I really liked my previous diesel X5 I am considering the 40e for my next ride. Just curious as to the downsides as compared to the diesel, if any?

Completely agree! I don't know why any manufacture won't do this.

80% of the miles I put on my diesel are on the freeway/highway in comfort mode and in cruise control all the way, even to pass (I very rarely use my feet to drive on the interstate); I drive at speeds between 60mph - 75mph (the last speeding ticket I got was 25+ years ago).
