need alignment or normal wear?

well, I am pretty sure this is not what you would call normal wear, but I remember reading somewhere in a thread that someone had a similar wear pattern on their rear tires. This set of tires has about 14,000 miles on them, a couple of track days (in the wet), a couple of dry autocrosses, but mostly commuting. the tread depth ranges from about 4.5/32 to 2/32.. both right and left tires are very similar in depth and manner of wear. Car is totally stock suspension wise, just added a tune recently though. it's also been in the 30-50 degree(F) range the last month so traction had been a concern. laying down and viewing from the rear I see some significant wear getting much worse on the outbound side of the tire... not sure if I've been running a little under-inflated as it almost looks a little cupped but that may be an illusion here... the wear bars make it seem like the wear is in a more tapering pattern from inner-outer.

I searched and couldn't find the post about yhe guy with what I remember to be wear in this pattern.. search feature isn't working for me on multiple devices so wanted to start a new thread.

pictures are often worth thousands of words ... top=passenger rear; bottom=driver rear

thanks for any input!

thanks for the positive feedback.

is it worth flipping the tires on the rims? I assume that's not something most people do with inside/outside tires but how important is that REALLY. I just hate being wasteful if I can avoid it.

if this is typical, I almost want to run a square setup! that's some pretty crazy wear and so uneven (to me, a non-expert...this is the first set of tires I've replaced due to wear.. forgive my ignorance!!)

thanks again!

Where is the crazy, uneven wear? I don't see it in your pictures.

that's why I said "to me..." ... it seems like if one side of tire is at 4.5/32" and the other side is at 2/32" that's uneven... maybe not crazy but seeing one side above the wear bar and the other side wearing the bar down, that's uneven wear

it makes me feel a little better seeing it similar on both sides, but like I said, I have never kept a car, let alone an M car, long enough to watch the tires wear all the way down. I'm a newb at replacing tires. that's why I'm seeking your counsel!

and BTW, I'm glad you don't see it as I do, that hopefully means it's not as bad as I thought.

The uneveness isn't crazy but I imagine the wear on the outside is due to your track/autocross events.

You probably want some negative camber if you're gonna continue with the track/autocross events.

Thanks man. i guess I assumed the fronts would suffer more on track/autox.. but they look even side to side. they have spent very few miles on a course of any kind and a vast majority of that was in the wet (or VERY wet).

i was a little surprised to see this on the rear but I'm glad you all are not alarmed. maybe I need the negative camber for street driving.

I'll press on with some new rear tires only for now and check whatever I get at shorter intervals to see how they are doing. I can make adjustments as needed.

thanks for the input!

The limited amount of mileage and the cost of tires for our M's is a tough pill to swallow. From what I am reading, given what you have put your tires thru, I think 14k isn't that bad.

My tires look identical. No trackdays/autocross events. Just normal everyday driving. I was getting worried myself. I can sleep better now, thank you.
