535i Bearings gone

My 2008 car started to make a noise on the rear which sounded like a plane's propeller and noise grew louder with speed. Having someone check it, he said it is the ball bearings.

Is this a common occurance? Where should I take it besides a dealer who will rip me off? I assume it is not covered under standard warranty.

Appreciate any insight and gottachas to watch out for before I go somewhere for a repair.

sounds like a wheel bearing. any independent can do it for you, no BMW expertise required.

Thank You Kyle ... Any rough idea on the cost? Is the wheel bearing part of hub assembly, or also comes just by itself.

It basically comes as a complete hub/bearing assembly, it's a bit different than your typical japanese setup.

cost will depend on the shops hourly rate and where they get parts from. typical indy getting parts from Worldpac? I'd guess somewhere around 300 or so, but that could be off. Maybe someone that has had one replaced could chime in.

Call a local auto recycler/salvage yard. The hub assembly is usually sold as a warrantied part and you may be able to buy with and extended warranty. Used OEM with warranty FTW!

Hi SP,
This is a common problem. If you are driving on rough roads then this problem is common. If you do not want to visit dealers then you can visit some car service center or top rated BMW mechanics.
