Hit a big pothole, opinions?

Hey guys, so I hit a pretty big pothole going around 35-40mph and ended up with a gash in my tire. The wheel doesn't look or feel compromised, but I can't tell if it bent a bit or not (photo below). I'm almost positive it's just dirt on the wheel that makes it look weird, plus the gash/bubble in the tire.

I didn't get any codes or tire pressure warnings at all. I do not have the wheel/tire insurance. Should I take it to BMW still?

Thoughts?

Your wheels look fine, probably need a new tire. Ill be more worried about your suspension component, check your alignment.

Right. Will be doing that asap. Car drove fine after impact and I didn't get any codes. Car wasn't pulling either way or acting differently at all. Will go to BMW service as soon as I can get a chance.

Rim doesn't look bent... but would take it in, agree that you will need a new tire.

Also, check with your city/state/insurance.. they could have a policy on pot holes and may pay for repairs.

MD has the worst roads I've ever seen. So many imperfections, bumps and holes. I feel for you OP.

Do you have tire/wheel warranty?

I think the rim looks a bit off (if ever so slightly)... Definitely have that checked.

You have to find negligence by the city/state to have them pay for any damages. Example, someone reports the pothole and the state does not fix it.

I'm actually in LA right now, so I assume it's from these recent rains. It was on Wilshire bvld exiting Beverly Hills (funny how every road in BH is prestine, but once you exit city limits into LA the streets are a MESS.

I think the rim might look off because of the dirt I tried clearing away/the size of the gash/bubble on the tire.

I will be taking the car in as soon as I can. I don't think many service centers are open Sunday, but hopefully something will be open on MLK Day on Monday

OP...the radius of curvature of the wheel rim looks altered at the level of tire injury. I would definitely have it evaluated at your local dealer...not sure if your dealer would be open on MLK day.

Bent rims are fixable by good local shops ...dealer will insist on replacing with new one

Well, I would absolutely not take your BMW to the dealer just to get tires. All they will do (at least here in San Diego) is call the Discount Tire store down the street for inventory and then markup the price and add an installation cost. Just take it yourself to Discount Tire. Same for wheels, the dealer will just call in a specialist to their shop, or send the wheel out, then mark it up. Any good tire shop (Discount Tire) the manager should know where to send wheels to be cosmetically fixed if that's what you want to do.

I'd say that rim definately has a straight edge where the impact has been...

U can tell by running a finger along the edge of the rim if it's bent or not. Looks bent in the pic. Go to Costco to get w new tire.

Wheel may not need to be fixed if it's leaking air. I would leave it alone if it's not. A wheel shop would most likely hammer it back out and the can damage wheel finish.

+1. Rim looks bent. Do you feel any vibration at highway speed?

Wow that must have been some impact, the wheel looks bent too.

Definitely change the tyre, don't trust that especially at speed and may as well check the wheel when the tyre is off. Looks like you may need a new wheel & tyre.

No vibrations what so ever. And no codes from the car regarding tire psi or alignment.

Sorry to see that. I'm from the valley, but once in a while I come the West side and I completely agree that Wilshire sucks! I really don't understand why that street is so jacked up!

I try to stay off Wilshire as much as possible. They are digging it up for Metro construction and it's a mess. OP-- sorry to see this; the tire definitely looks compromised (the alloy to a lesser extent). May I ask what suspension setting you were in? When I'm driving in DTLA surface streets, I always keep it in comfort but wondering if it would make any difference if I had hit a pothole like the one you did.
