tire pressure for a 245-40 square set up?
Hi guys,
Just got my winter tires on my car. Hakkapelitta 8, 245-40 18 all around. Recommanded pressure for stock 19's summer tires is 32 psi. When I got out of the garage 3 tires were at 36 psi and one at 33 psi. Don't know why or how the tech decided to set the tire pressure. What would be the ideal pressure for my winter tires? Should it be higher than 32psi? |

Since no one else is replying to this...I'll go ahead and say there isn't a one pressure is good for all tires or conditions kinda answer. I would start at whatever the tire manufacturer recommends for that tire which is usually printed on the side of the tire itself or listed on their website.

Winter tires tend to be softer and initial set in needs pressure especially if it's still warm temps; it's around 50 here in the day. Talk about a slow start for winter Remember for every 10F drop in temp you will see 1psi drop. So at 36psi in 50f, that's going to be 32 psi on a cold 10f morning which is just about right for me. |

just read your post and the tirerack article.
very good read. I do have my car in a semi heated garage where the temperature is between 50 and 40 (when it gets really cold outside) So if I measure the "cold pressure" in my garage when I go out and it's 30 outside I lose around 2 psi. I will probably inflate my tires at 36 or 37 psi. (+4 to 5 psi) +3 psi because it's a softer sidewall winter tire, and +2psi because I mesure the cold temperature in my garage. |

Also, bear in mind that tire pressure will increase as you are driving them because of heat, so anywhere from 2-5 psi over inflation is ok in winter. I tend to keep it on the low side. Also another variable is what pressure gauge do you use! All this talk is wasted if your tire pressure gauge is not precise. I use Joes racing I found some digital pencil type are off by 2-3 psi.

I use this gauge and it always gives me the same pressure as reflected by the TPMS on the car.

FWIW, I'm running 34 PSI all around on my square setup - 255/35/19.
I find it's a good balance between ride comfort, snow traction, noise and fuel economy. |
