UPDATED WITH VIDEO - Diagnose this engine whine noise?
UPDATE: ADDED VIDEO
I just spent a very frustrating 4 hours replacing my 2 tensioner pulleys and belts. I was going to change the idler pulley also but ECStuning sent me the wrong part... Unfortunately, it didn't solve my problem. Can anyone diagnose this whining sound coming from my engine? http://picosong.com/bcX6/ Updated with video above Last edited by fancybmw; 01-18-2016 at 04:11 PM.. Reason: Added video |

Does the sound get worse when turning the steering wheel? That would point me toward power steering pump. If not maybe the ac compressor and or clutch/bearing or maybe the bearings for the alternator are starting to fail.

I have that sound too, don't remember it being there before... Its sometimes there and sometimes not there... I never hear it after a hot spirited drive though...

Maybe you have a supercharger installed and you just don't know it?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. u know what bearings I'm talking about , the ones of the rod type.... but in all honesty it's hard to tell but sounds basically normal. I wouldn't worry till it gets worse. If it even does... if there are no knocks or rattles it's likely nothing to worry about too much.

I get that same noise during a cold start (or at least notice it during a CS). If were referring to the noise as you increase RPM via rev? Sounds healthy to me!

I guess yr talking about the "whistle" noise that goes along with the refs, right?
I really don't think it's the engine. Most likely it's something driven by either one of the belts or the belt by itself. One belt is for the alternator and the water pump and the second one is for the AC compressor. Turn off the AC and see if the noise stops. Also each belt have an adjusting pulley. Could be one of them as well. My bet, according to what I can hear, the problem is on one belt or one pulley. Try spraying some belt conditioner on the belts. One at a time. Also spray some oil on each pulley. Also one at a time then check the noise. Good luck |

Here's a video of the noise that I am getting. It comes and goes. This weekend I made a hard right turn, nothing to crazy, and then it started. Can anyone identify it?
