Car hesitating to accelerate in 1st with M button on. Any ideas??

Hey Guys,

Last night I was stopped at a traffic light. The car was in S 5 and I had the power set to Sports plus. I hit the M button. When the light turned green and I hit the gas pedal hard the car started accelrating but then hesitated as though i took the foot off the pedal then accelrated and then off again... The sequence went on till I shifted to 2nd and then it was gone, it happens only in 1st when pushing down on the gas. No codes or anything. I thought it was random but it did the same exact thing at the next traffic light. This happened only with the M button on. Its perfectly fine with the M button off. What could it be? Any one experience this before? Should I get it checked. Forgive me if this is something obvious that I should know but I am not a guy who has extensive mechanical knowledge about cars...just getting to learn more about these wonderful M machines so any advise will help.

Was MDM mode on? Could be traction control kicking in to stop your rear wheels from spinning while you're flooring it in 1st.

Yes MDM mode was on. But if that's the case then what I dont understand is why did the car sound like as though I was taking off my foot of the gas pedal, I dont how to describe the sound but you do know the sound it makes when you push hard on gas and then take your foot off. Also the cycle of the events was in fraction of sec intervals..so like acceleration 0.5 secs, then pause 0.5 secs then acceleration 0.5 sec...

I m not sure if I should try to replicate it at the dealer and have it checked out or is it something normal that happens when I was trying to floor with the M button on. Any other thoughts?

I would suggest doing it with traction control completely off but I would be very careful if you did and make sure your in an empty lot. This will let your tires spin without dsc or mdm interfering. Meaning no cutting off power.

If it still happen you can take it in. Remember that in 1st gearthe pedal is really sensitive too so that might also be why.

I'm sure someone else will come in shortly.

That's exactly how fuel cut feels when DSC kicks in. Go lighter on the pedal in first gear or turn off DSC altogether and see what happens. When I first got the car I thought the same thing, it feels as if the car is misfiring. Check out the dash, the car will alert you when TC kicks in.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try it with DSC off and see when I get a chance.

were you on a bumpy road? With M mode on the accelerator is very sensitive. IF you are going over bumps, your foot could be moving thus decreasing throttle.

yep, this. And also the car can skip over bumps causing traction issues as well.

No I wasn't on a Bumpy road. Like I said it was very short bursts of accelration followed by drop in power each burst lasting about a fraction of a second...it was that quick. I was jolting vigorrously forward and backward when it happened and then I shift to 2nd and it's normal.

If MDM is on, it will still cut power in 1st gear if it senses that your wheels will just spin uncontrollably. It will allow some degree of slip, but not a lot.

When you turn off DTC, make sure your EDC is switched to the softest setting for the best grip off the line. Like others have said, if you feel the power cutting in and out when DTC is off, take the car into a shop/dealer.

It happens to me in 1st gear with M button on when I am gentle with the throttle. It goes away if I shift to second or push the pedal down further. If I am going to be putzing around, M mode is off and I don't have the hesitation.
