I've been using Nokians on and off for 15 years and every time I stray, I come back to them. My latest order...Xi3's, because Nokians were not available in the group buy.
The grip in various conditions (rain, slush, snow, freezing rain, ice) is well-balanced, tire wear, road noise, good mpg's, etc. all very good. It's clear they try to build a good all around tire.

The Contis and WRs would both be considered performance snows. R2s will greatly compromise dry road performance for improved snow/ice traction. Edit- I noticed your location. R2s would be overkill. Stick with a performance snow, and at most, the Xi3 (better in snow/ice vs performance snows, better on dry road vs Blizzak and Nokian R2.) |

The answer is depends on your winter conditions. Check this thread on the R2, obviously a clear winner for regions with harsh winter conditions. Mine are mounted on 18" BBS SR019 and resting in my garage waiting to be installed soon, I will post driving impressions soon after!

There is a case to be made for running something more aggressive in the mid Atlantic states all the way up to Boston. First the temps cycle just above or below freezing, which can mean more mixed precip, more thawing and re freezing. Second, the extreme volumes of traffic can often press down a thin layer of snow, melt it and it re freezes into a thin sheet of ice. If the roads weren't treated with brine, it's no fun at all. Add 99 other drivers who are incapable of distinguishing ice from snow and you get the picture.
I've run two sets of 3D's on my Audi, but they always left something to be desired when ice was present. I didn't want something as soft as a WS Blizzak, so the R2's were a good compromise. I still have to tone down the driving a bit, and by spring I'm itching to put the summers on, but I get that added level of grip when it's slippery out.

The best deals are usually local dealers. Unfortunately for me, the closest dealers are at least an hour out, so I order from tiresbyweb.com. At least I get free shipping and no tax, but no discount on the tires. They are very quick to ship if the tires are in stock. The only coupon codes I've found for them are for veterans. I won't abuse their generosity, so that's that.

Thanks so much man! I took RKAM3 recommendation to go tiresbyweb. Free shipping to my dealership and no tax. Why not!
Only thing is I guess Nokians don't come in 275/35/19? I was able to find the stock front tire size 255/35/19, but had to substitute the rears with 255/40/19. What do you guys think? Should be ok, no? . |

I'm not sure here...I haven't been here long enough to know. We do know we can reduce the circumference of the rear wheels to match the front and there are no ill effects to the electronic monitoring systems in the car (factory tires are square all around). But you're going the other way and increasing the rear circumference. You might need to search to see what the rear tolerance is. Not sure about tire clearance and that may depend on if you're lowered. Hopefully someone who knows a little more chimes in, otherwise search.

Nokian Tyres branched off from Nokia (yes the cell phones) back in 2003.
I ran the Hak8's in 255/35/19 (square setup) all winter season last year with no issues. They are mounted on 9.5" wide wheels. |

I am mounting them on my staggered 19" 437m wheels. So I went with 255/35/19 fronts and 255/40/19 for rears. Hope no fitment issues. Well, I guess to late for that too. They're at the shop ready for install next week.
