Crap. M4 or 911s cab

I know this has been done to death but I wanted to share my story anyway. I've wanted a 911 for as long as I can remember, and it seems that whenever it's time to buy a new car, I just can't seem to pull the trigger.

Well this time, I'd finally reconciled it with myself to trade in my 2011 M3 cab for a 2013 C2S cab. It was a done deal, I just had to get myself to Toronto to pick it up.

Well, in the meantime, my M3 had an engine failure and I had to bring it into the dealership for service. While there, I was looking at the M4 and was approached by my salesman. We agreed to take a quick spin (which was awesome fun) which was followed up with pricing discussions, mainly what my trade in was worth.

Well, to my suprise, they are prepeared to give me $5,000 more that Porsche. That combined with the fact that the M4 would be about $20,000 less than the C2s to start, makes for an almost $30,000 difference when taxes are taken into consideration.

Don't get me wrong, this is not intended to stir up a debate about which car is better, because they are both amazing. It's just that it has made me question the Porsche. I may have to put the brakes on that and suffer with a new M4 cab delivered to me in the spring.

By the way, I should mention that I paid $43,800 for the M3 in OCtober 2013, and was offered $42,000 on trade today. Effectively, it cost me $75 per month to drive for 2 years. Great deal.

Why don't you go test out the Porsche and compare

If that trade is legit, and you're getting a good price on the new M4, forget the Porsche!

$42,000.00 for an 2011 M3. Is that really what dealers trade in value is. That seems high getting that from a dealer. Good for you.

I've owned seven 911's (most recently two 991 "S" models). I most recently left a 2015 911S for my M4.

The 911 to me is like a F-22 raptor fighter jet. Totally precise, quick, tight. Very small / no room for others, not much trunk storage. So don't expect to take these on a vacation unless you are trailering it. Fun to drive skillfully.

The M4 is more like an A-10 Warthog. Bad to the bone, mean, with eyes and teeth painted on the nose. More like if Germans made muscle cars. You can travel with 4 people and luggage and take it on vacation. You can lay down the seat and put an 88 key keyboard in it...

I'm really enjoying the M4 more than I did my last two 911's. Because for daily driving you can still chirp the tires, drift a little on a highway exit ramp, and personally I get a LOT more looks in my M4 than I did in the 911.

You'll have to decide for yourself, but they are so different.. One is small, quick, precise. The other one is bigger and badder to the bone mean.

If it was just for the track or a second car, the 911 wins. For everyday living for me--- the M4 wins.

YMMV.

If I got such a good trade-in deal, I would get the M4.

However for you the decision appears emotional. After you get the M4, you ll still want the 911... I am certain, I know the feeling. You ll be thinking of 911, searching on web for pricing, frequently... then you ll trade you M4 a couple years from now... when you ll take a bigger loss...

Therefore, I say get the 911 since that's what you say you have always wanted...

Will you be OK with getting an NA 911 when the turbos are on their way? If you think you ll again want a 2016 one with turbo engines in say 2018, then maybe get the M4 now?

It sounds like the M4 you are getting is a good deal. Yes Porsche always cost more than BMW, let's face it the Porsche badge is why it cost so much. Not sure what your needs are but the M4 is a much better daily driver compared to 911. I too consider a Porsche (although a Cayman) but at the end I got the M4 because the car is fantastic. Nothing wrong with the Cayman but it was more of an emotional thing.

However I still want a Porsche and I will probably get it as my next car. There is something about a Porsche that is different.

///M POWAAAH!

I'm not a big fan of the cab but if otherwise. I'd go for the 911. Personally it depends on your usage. Personally I'd love to own a 911 but for my daily commute. I settled with the M4 because of practicality.

I plan to get a 911 Turbo S as a second car.

I think the point is thatnit wasnt nearly as maneuverable as says an F22 (the 911) but a butload faster.

I agree. That's what I saying to my wife. Out of 2 impractical choices, the M4 seems to be less impractical.

Having had a few bmws and a few porsches (in the family, not mine) I'll chime in here. If there is an emotional thing for the porsche and you aren't passionate about the M4 just get the P-car. There really is something different about them that you won't find in the BMW. And the 991 is especially good. The M is going to give you everything you want from a performance and usability standpoint and for me it solves the passion issue too, M cars have always been a fascination of mine.

The M4 is a much better DD, and if you need the room the M4 is perfect. If you're going to the track Porsche hands down a ton of fun and predictable steering. I got the M4 for the power and I wanted a nice convertible vs the M6 is a boat. Good luck.

I don't own a 911 but I'll chip in mainly because my cousin, who lives 2 streets down from me, owns a 911 GT3 RS.

I... very VERY rarely see him drive it. Like near to no time I ever see him drive it. I know he does but it's mainly to places that are literally just in the city. Cafe's mainly to hang out.

Now my M4 isn't my daily but I know it can easily be. That's the difference between the two. 911 isn't made for usual daily driving unless you honestly don't care. (Which my cousin and I are hyper anal about keeping our cars pristine)

M4 is WAY more practical then the 911. That is a huge given and isn't really even a question.

911 can be a DD if you don't need a back seat. But clearly a RS of GT3 is for the track, and not a fun DD it's a street legal race car basically. My GT3 has 3000 miles on it in one year, and if not the track I will go on a mountain run with the boys. It's actually the best car I have owned. I see why your cousin doesn't take it out much I'm sure he has other cars.

Get the M4. the 997 is old power/old tech. I had the 997 while its a fun car it is more comparable to the 2011 M3. I traded the 997 in for the M4 vert and still kept my 2011 M3.

M4 all the way.
