N55 PPK White Smoke

Hello, had the girlfriend driving behind me today and she said when I speed up to pass a car smoke came out of my exhaust. I'm afraid this is the turbo?

2011 N55 PPK. Completely stock at 60,0XX miles.

I just did a new oil change yesterday and added BMWs fuel cleaner.

Is the smoke from the cleaner or the turbo?

I suppose it's possible. I had been driving 15 mins prior to getting on it to pass.

Hopefully it's not the turbo. Don't know what the symptoms are. I know N54 turbos are covered for 8 years or 82,000 miles, but the N55 turbo is only covered for 4 years or 50,000 miles, right? Definitely don't want that!

Let us know what you find out.

Will keep an eye on it. Car runs and pulls fine. I'm hoping it's the fuel cleaner.

catless DPs?

I know N54 people have a bunch of issues smoking once they go fully catless.

Completely stock besides PPK. Stock dp. I got on it again this morning after driving for half hour. Did a pull from 55 to 100. Pulled hard and felt find but got another big puff of smoke behind me. I'm really hoping it's the fuel cleaner. Idk what else it could be if the car still feels great.

I'm going to run this tank of gas down this week and see what happens this up coming weekend when I get on it.

Probably just a cold engine. Does your car still have a cat?

But what is this BMW fuel cleaner? BMW AG doesn't endorse fuel cleaners... unless they have changed their minds. ?

Car has the original cats and downpipe.

Part # 82-14-0-413-341
https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462

Sorry they classify it as a "Additive" but states that it cleans and pulls up in the catalog as FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER. "OEM BMW Fuel Additive. Cleans the entire fuel system. Restores lost power and performance. Cleans and protects fuel gauge sensors."

I will note that the engine did seem to run a little smoother on the commute this morning and was very quiet when i got in the parking garage (no ticking, which is why I wanted to try this and see if it would do anything for that). Maybe the smoke is just a sign of the cleaner actually working?

^^That F.I. Cleaner looks a lot like Chevron's Techron cleaner, to me. ? It is a good product. But still I think its something that BMW NA is selling and not AG(over here). BMW AG does not endorse any fuel injector cleaners.

I think BG products are probably a better solution. Especially those systems where the car can run on a few cans of BG products to clean the engine.

With either F.I. product... I would recommend you to change your engine oil after using such products. I also remember back in the day(90's) when I had my Porsche 944 Turbo(I was running 1bar of boost with a stage II chip)... when ever I would run a bottle of Techron thru the car... when I would accelerate briskly... I could hear the engine start to knock for a split second or two before the DME would retard the engine. I never really liked using the stuff... but Techron does seem to have a (postive)following by most car people.

^ Correct, it is indeed Chevron's Techron cleaner but just rebranded for BMW. If I remember correctly, it even says Techron on the bottom of BMW's bottle.

So do we think the smoke that I am seeing is from this fuel additive? Or should I start looking into other things?

Not sure. I think you need to burn thru a few tanks of fuel and then have your GF follow you again to see IF you have any smoke coming out from your exhaust. ?
