Hood damaged by flying object

As the title suggests, I was driving to the beach on Saturday when a truck in front of me runs over an object in the middle of the road at 75MPH and sends it airborne...turns out it was a metal bar and it hit the hood of my 2 month old M3.

My dealer is also a BMW certified body shop, drove over today for an estimate...while I'm still waiting for the written estimate they said they'll need to replace the hood but also paint the fenders so the paint will match...

OH NOOOOOOO! Unfortunately it is true regarding painting not just the hood. On my last M they had to re-do the entire front clip (upper part of bumper, fenders, and hood) in order to do a proper blend in of the paint. I hope you're car comes out as good as new.

little insurance post here, the object that hit this car was moving so therefore it is covered under comprehensive if the damage was done buy something that was not moving it's considered collision, with collision it can affect your rates with comprehensive it doesn't,. so if this ever happens to somebody make sure you tell the adjuster that the object was moving and not stationary. for example a truck a few hundred yards ahead of you has a battery fly off the back of his tailgate, the battery will quickly come to rest in a traffic lane, once you hit the battery that is collision, unless the battery was rolling and tumbling when you hit it and therefore could not be avoided.

True....I spoke to my insurance agent before speaking with the insurance company and he said the same thing.

That sucks! Also sucks to hear the whole front end is getting painted. Id take pictures of it all so the next buyer can see that it wasn't a collision but a minor thing

sorry about what happened to you but for next time, consider adding a clear bra - I have clear bra installed on my entire front end.

it has protected my vehicle several times - avoiding any damage with things flying on the freeway.

in your case looks like the dent would have still occurred, but there would not be any need to repaint. just have the dent popped which is less than 100 bucks.

saves time and money I think

Clear bra wouldnt save that. I've been on high speed mountain runs and rocks flying will gauge a clear bra at high speed. Good luck on the repaid feel for ya man, and no worries it will be like new with the hoop replacement.

Yea, it's a little un-nerving that has to be done

Thanks for the tip but the hood has a deep gouge in it, I doubt a clear bra would have prevented that.

The only thing a clear bra would have done is add to the repair cost.

Agreed. And would save you from having to blend the paint. Great idea.

Too bad man. If it's any consolation I also had to re paint my Austin Yellow trunk and they did a perfect paint match job. Perfect. They will make it right for you, just sucks that it happened.

I had my AY bumper repainted after I was rear ended 8 days after getting my car. First dealer (non certified) screwed it up and it came out yellow/greenish and the metallic sparkle was off and too reflective in some areas. Second dealer (certified) did an amazing job, and was a true "paint geek". They had a computerized paint matcher (looks like an old school camera), told me that BMW actually has 2 color codes for AY (up to 4 for other colors), and they tried them both and then customized the color manually from there. I am truly happy with it now, and dont think about it every time I walk up to my car. There is hope for matching AY!

I think with the hood you will be better off because it is metal, but it is a good sign that they mentioned having to paint the front end to blend the car properly - sounds like they know what they are doing.

Good luck with this!

If they have to blend then they're not pros. Real paint pros do not need to blend panels. They paint match it right. I would get a 2nd opinion. If you were in CA there is one shop I know that is BMW, Rolls Royce, Audi, Porsche, VW, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Ferrari certified and they told me they do not blend panels.
