Stock sound of N55

Hey guys,

I'm really enjoying my 135 with DCT especially now that my DME software has been updated.

I'm writing this post because it seems that my car sounds a little different than another MY13 DCT 135 I test drove before buying the one I have now.

The one I test drove had a much more pronounced turbo whistling/air sucking noise under heavy throttle with the windows down. As far as I'm aware, it was stock.

My 135 has less turbo noise and more exhaust. I'm not complaining cause both sound good. Just wondering what may be causing the inconsistency in sound between both cars I've drive.

Thanks,

Andrew

Maybe it did have a aftermarket air filter or bmw performance software installed. There is no difference in sound for N55 equipped 1er's, if they are completely stock and equipped the same.

I used to enjoy the sound of my stock 135 - decent tone, etc. I just wished it was a tad louder, not for showing off or anything, but just so I could hear it more.
Got the PE with Y-Pipe and life is grand. The grass really is greener on this side of the fence.

You should have went with catless downpipes instead of an exhaust

The way you describe the "other" N55 sounds is exactly how a friend of mine's N55 sounds. His is a 2011 with DCT. Lots of turbo whistle and air sucking noises. He has an AR high flow(200 cell ?) catted downpipe. It sounds awesome. He says my N54 with my PE sounds better. I love his car's noises at low revs as he rockets out of a turn. Mine has more mid range noises - I think. Both are great noise making machines.

It could also be how the other car was driven. I know even before when I had my stock exhaust... everyone would comment to me that my exhaust did not sound "stock". Especially on cold start. I think it is bc I drive so fast at WOT on the Autobahn over here. No really. I think its also why my car sits lower than most US spec cars, bc of all the high speed driving I do.

I am looking into high flow catted DP (cp-e) as my next mod. I know some people say its a waste, but I don't want to deal with exhaust fumes and the hassle of swapping out for emissions testing. Mainly the smell/fumes thing.
I was enjoying some spirited driving alongside (mostly in front of) a Nissan 200SX recently and when I let him in front of me I could immediately tell he was catless. Not a fan. I'm a helicopter pilot and I suck up enough jet fuel exhaust to get over that smell really fast.

While we're o. The topic, and I am hijacking this thread (but apparently only for the OP, Mike, and Dack), I am debating between DP and Upgraded inter cooler for next mod.
Input?

Tough choice, but I would go first with a FMIC since you have a tune to take advantage of a FMIC. Both mods cost about the same($600 to $900 for a FMIC vs $800 for AR catted dp).

Maybe my buddy Swadeness will chime it. Its his car that I was referring to above. His dp(with cat) sounds so good coming out of the turns. The only time it smelled was on a cold start for a few seconds. Normally it doesn't have that catless smell - whoch is a big plus IF you ask me.

tough choice.
Between catted DP and intercooler i would get the intercooler first.
