3M 90000 paint defender spray film
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BSK...MB95KSPQN1GJ8#
Saw this on amazon. Has anyone used this yet? I plan on doing pcd and was trying to find a solution for preventing rock chips on the drive back to chicago. I wanna get xpel and cquartz on when i get back, but dont know if this will make it more difficult, having to peel it all off. |

I personally won't spray anything on a brand new car just to deal with the struggle of getting it off. An easier solution is ez-shield temporary protection film. I used it for my drive back from PCD, as well as a track session. It stays on well and removes easily when you're done with it. Their processing time is slow, so give yourself a two-week buffer if you decide to order.

I got the 3" roll since it can be a nuisance to work with in large sheets. Haha! Unlike painters tape, this is more of a heavy duty saran wrap material that stays on well and leaves zero residue. It takes a couple first tries to get it on properly, but certainly worth it as a temporary solution.

Here are some pics with the film on the passenger side. Looks like crap up close but relatively indistinguishable from afar.

Horrible from up close, but effective. I am kind of worried about doing PCD for re-delivery after ED, but this gives me some peace of mind. Thanks as always, Doc!

No worries, just glad that OP didn't end up spraying his car!
As for PCD, do it, no questions asked! My drive back from SC was relatively uneventful, except for the one or two trucks that I had to keep a good distance away from due to debris. If you can, do take the long way back through the Smoky Mountains (TOTD and/or Cherohala Skyway).

Ive used 3M paint defender and it does a pretty good job. The most important part is the prep work. Make sure you follow the instructions to a T. The first time i sprayed it too lightly and it didnt cure properly and it was very difficult to get off. Otherwise its a really good product if done correctly!

I am also planning on doing PCD and I talked to the guy that is going to do Xpel install once I get the car back home and he recommended Tracwrap
http://www.tracwrap.com/ It's made my Xpel and it's supposed to be a DIY quick solution that gives you basically the same protection as Xpel at 8 mils thick, but without the cost, perfect for a return PCD trip. I was looking into EZshield as it's pretty cheap but I wonder if the film is thick enough to stop rock chips on the way home? Last edited by jcote258; 08-03-2015 at 01:09 PM.. |

Seems like a great option but a bit pricey? I gotta do some math to figure out how much i would need. Hopefully easy to put on. The little disclaimer is a little worrying though, saying not to put it on placed where paint was refinished or that it may take some of the clear coat when removing. Maybe a problem if vpc had to touch some areas up? If it cost less than $100, im gonna get it.

There is also another solution called Trakk Tape. I was reading through another forum and a guy bought a 6 inch roll and a 3 inch roll and didn't use all of it and covered the front bumper, hood, rocker panels and the side mirrors. You can go to http://www.trakkrats.com/Ordering.html. Go all the way to the bottom and put BMW120 into the Racers Net box. The roll will be discounted from $145 to $120. That is six times as much tape for less than twice the price of the 100 foot 6" wide rolls or it's about 70 bucks for the 6"x 100' roll which is what I will probably be getting. This stuff is 5 Mils thick.
One more solution but I just heard about it but don't know it's effectiveness or if the adhesion properties are going to be an issue (Acrylic?) but this is also 5.5 Mils thick and it's CHEAP, 24 bucks for a 4'' x 108' roll with amazon Prime on top of that: Patco 5068 Greenhouse Repair Tape (Short Term): 4 in. x 36 yds. (Clear) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 So the rough math would be, the car is roughly 6 feet wide, which gives you just under 7, 6 foot lengths. At 6 inches wide, that gives you about 3.5 feet of coverage if we are talking about the Tracwrap . Now due to the gaps on the front bumper, there will smaller strips putting more coverage on the hood. The hood is about 4X5? feet so one roll of the 6" x 40' application will not be enough to cover the front, your basically going to need twice that to get the whole hood and front bumper. A couple rolls of EZShield and double up the application or check out the Trakk Tape which seems to be getting good reviews or if you are on a budget or just down want to throw a bunch of money away you can look into the Patco Greenhouse Repair tape. I'll be looking at the Trakk Tap and Greenhouse tape as it's a temp solution before I get Xpel installed on the car when I get home. Last edited by jcote258; 08-04-2015 at 11:22 AM.. |
