Brake dust cleaning intervals?
About how long can one go without cleaning one's rims and keep from getting brake dust staining? I have read the newest brake pad compound is more wheel friendly. Is this true? What are you guys/gals experiencing out there for your daily drives?

Unless you really layer and bake it on (for years), I think you'll be OK in terms of stains or such, especially with the iron-X type wheel cleaners out there. It just starts to look bad after a couple days; that's the main reason I clean the wheels. Dammit I shoulda got the CCB's.

I've gone 3-4 weeks and ~1500-2000 miles between dust cleanings. My wheels were waxed back in April (with a Porsche hard-wax by myself), I use a wheel woolie, and I use Sonax or P21s wheel cleaner products and every time the brake dust just comes right off with no staining so far.

^ Thanks guys. I'm so OCD with my car washing, the wheels being the most pain in my back, literally, so hearing I can skip a few "full rim details" now and then makes me feel better and not give in to the lure of taking the car to my local auto wash, ugh, for a quicky.

You could also consider applying a sealant like cQuartz or Opticoat to your wheels as well. Makes cleaning off that brake dust way easier....

I put cquartz UK on my wheels and it makes cleaning easier but it didn't help with brake dust sticking to the wheels. I used armor all wheel protectant and it takes a week for the brake dust to show. Still the best for brake dust.
