Question Current Owners - can we expect iDrive update coming?

Should current owners of F8x cars expect a software update to iDrive when 2016 cars are available?

Will the update be over-the-air or need to go to dealer?

Perhaps there is historical precedence or word-of-mouth from a dealer that provides some concrete evidence.

Thanks

Over the air map updates only apply to MY2016 M3/M4.

If you want a significant update (i.e. not just a minor Bluetooth update), you'll need to visit the dealer and convince them to do it free.

Isn't it free while on warranty?

My bet is there will not be an upgrade available for pre-2016 cars.

The iDrive update. Why would you need to convince them to do it for free? I expect they will update it every time the car is serviced. Some updates suppose to arrive through OTA anyway.

iDrive updates are only performed if there is a reproducible issue with your system.

You need to convince them that you have a reproducible issue or BMW will not pay the dealer to perform the update. That is the way it works.

At least some of the updates can be downloaded from http://www.bmw.com/update and installed via USB. There was also a security update pushed OTA this year, so perhaps the new system is more flexible and easier to upgrade. Maybe they only charge for major versions?

isn't the new iDrive upgrade mostly a hardware change? that's what I had heard.

I have heard this as well - what I am hoping for is a SW Update to iDrive that will have a new option to select to retain (persist) your engine/suspension/steering modes after restart.

That would be very helpful and convenient.

That setting has never been implemented in any BMW yet. Not even code-able, and plenty of sharp coders have searched and tried for years and nothing.
