UPDATE: S65 with a custom hole in block
To start off not my car just doing the work and showing you guys. The car was towed in after a 4 to 5 shift at full throttle ended in white smoke and rough running.
First thing a found in the belly pan not a good sign... part of the cylinder wall and chunks of rod. Removed the engine today and found the hole wow! I will keep updating photos when we get the engine apart and the build of the new engine with some upgrades. Already have to fun boxes waiting Last edited by Ging; 05-31-2015 at 01:28 PM.. |

Top of the rod is blue, while the rod big end isn't. That looks like the piston got real hot and things went boom. Who's tune is in this car? I know you know...
When you get those rod big ends disassembled and the bed plate removed, let me know if the crank is still good. I might have a buyer for it. Last edited by regular guy; 05-21-2015 at 12:16 AM.. |

That photo makes the rod look blue you can see the chunk in my hand is not blue. The rod actually made two nice holes in the block. The valley has a good sized hole and the start has a couple hits on it. Ill keep you posted on the crank.

off the top of my head 2008 with 80,000ish km, stock bearings , 10-12 thousand km oil changes for the last 2 years with the person who owns it. unknown before he owned it. To me right now still need to pull it part and look at everything but this looks like a rod failure not the rod bearing. On the plus side aftermarket insurance is covering the bill

Is detonation the only way a rod can fail? What signs of detonation do you see as opposed to bearing failure? We need to see the piston and the bearing. There are far more failures attributed to bearings than detonation for these motors.

. No but based on personal experience of windowing blocks it was always due to detonation that then was bad enough to spin bearings and kick rods outside. But this is also m3post speculation like eveyone else.

But granted the OP says the rod B.E. isn't blue and it's just the coloring of the photo. No reason not to believe him on that, so that's probably not the case here. But regardless, my example stands. Doesn't take speculation to know what happened when you see what I described. |

update
Got the oil pan off and and quickly pulled the broken rod and the rod cap from the rod next to the broken rod. Heres some quick photos of the damage. The broken rod sure made some damage inside. I had to use a punch and hammer to remove the broken rod from the crank as it was bent and twisted. Heres both sides of the broken rod. The crank looks pretty good considering ... Broken rod bearing lower cap Rod bearing lower cap from rod next to broken one Upper bearing broken rod. Being Bent and jammed next to the other rod caused some bad wear. Engine was run after the failure to move it into the shop and onto the hoist not the best but already knew we new block was on order. Took a video sounded great Haven't had time to fully disassemble the engine as of now maybe next week we can get to it. I did take a borescope camera and check the piston no signs of detonation and plugs looked good too. |
