"BMW estimated that the retail value of the totaled cars was more than $6 million."

I recall reading somewhere that any damage of 3% or less does not need to be disclosed to the customer. So minor touch-up may have been done on many BMWs that are shipped out nationwide without any of us having a clue about it. Kind of scary!

Im pretty sure any damaged car must be disclosed to the customer under a rule. There was a law suit against BMW many years back relating to this and the guy suing won millions.

After a little digging, it appears that repairs up to $500 in value do not have to be disclosed. Also, the tools used to repair the issue are apparently capable of returning the car to factory specs and are widely trusted to do top notch work.
I agree that all damage should be disclosed, but there are certain things I wouldn't really care about if they could return it to factory specification easily (cracked headlamp housing, etc). |

Before you take delivery request a full printout of the Vehicle Inquiry Report for your car. Any repairs, whether at the factory or VPC will be at least generically noted. For instance codes 170, 172, 174 & 176 indicate the car went in for some corrections after completing assembly but before being released for shipping. Shipping damage repaired at the VPC will also be noted.

Finally some numbers. The article says only 30 M3s were totaled. This is actually no big deal. We should be getting about 700 of these things a month in US. 30 lost demo cars should not delay the production of customers cars for more than a few days, maybe a week at this transitional phase of production. I think the significance of this news has been exaggerated.

The M3s, yes--others were customer and dealer cars.

Word from my friend who works at an Infiniti dealershipin NJ is that his contact who wholesales cars has been presented with the option to purchase these damaged/repaired M3s with salvage titles at a steep discount. Then again, he could just be blowing smoke.

Until something happens to it and it costs you an arm and a leg to fix it. My guess is the salvaged ones will go cheaply, relatively speaking - but the risk you run is great. Not to mention you shoot yourself in the foot with respect to reselling the car in the future.

At least they are taking responsibility of this incident. Does anyone know if BMW will take up the damage bill or their insurance company? 6 followed by 6 more zeros makes a pretty big number.
