Oil consumption countermeasures
Hello Everyone!
I´m new in the forum, I have just bought a 135i N54. I´m a Spanish engineer living in Wiesbaden (Germany) I wanted to ask about the possible reasons for oil consumption and the proper countermeasures for them. When I bought the car I got oil refill at the dealer. After 2000km it shows the level at minimun +1l. I have not pushed it too much, just some WOT to test the car but nothing else. To give you an idea I am driving 10.8l/100km average...this is very soft driving, trust me. The car drives very good, no smoke, smooth response, stable idle, so I do not know where it can come from. The car has 57000km... I read around the forum about PCV valve, but it seems too much oil consumption to be just that right? Maybe there is something else... Any ideas?? Thanks in advance! |

Our cars used oil. Get used to it. Normally IF you don't push the car that hard... you should be able to go 5K kms without needing to add any oil. It only takes driving some high speeds>220kph or faster to use a little bit of oil. This is normal.
BMW says that you have a problem when you have to add 1l of oil in 1K kms. I'm sure you are going further than that! Also... IF you do a lot of short trips(less than 15 min)... your engine oil is getting diluted with gasoline. You would need to drive the car longer to burn off water and gasoline in the oil. Also... what kind of oil are you using? I hope a LL4 or LL1 rated oil. LL4 is what you should be using. I use Castrol FST Edge 0w40 and I change my oil every 5K kms. Dackel

Yes. I try to change my oil every 5K kms or six months. Which ever comes sooner. The best oil is fresh oil!
I know most Germans only change their oil every two years or 22K kms. That's way too long for me. Then again... most Germans only keep their cars for a few years. So... I'm not selling mine anytime soon. So I change the oil a lot. I change the oil and filter myself.

I once knew a BMW mechanic (at a dealer) who owned a very loose early 80s big-motor E28 (low tech, no turbo or fancy cylinder linings, etc). Used a quart every 400 miles (650km-ish). He'd top it off as needed (keeping additive levels good), change his filter every few months... but almost never drained it. NOT RECOMMENDED HERE, just a fun tale
OP, your consumption does not seem out of line.

Hi,
Thanks for the responses... As I said I have just bought the car, so I only did 2000km so far. And I do not think is normal to be at minimun level already. Unless from top to minimun there is like 0,5 liter... If I have to spend around 1l each 2000km I will get crazy! Besides I have not gone to The track, I do not want to imagine how much will be there... Are All of you burning oil like that? Really? Btw, I bought one Castrol 0w40 FST can to start refilling, my plan is to use this from now on... |
